NewAngler Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 I think I made a royal mistake. I got my wife hooked, I mean HOOKED on fishing. Now, it's a good thing and a bad thing all at once. Hear me out. The Good: -Get to spend time with the woman I love, doing the thing I love. -Get to spend time with the woman I love, doing the thing I love. -Get to spend time with the woman I love, doing the thing I love. -Get to spend time with the woman I love, doing the thing I love. -Get to spend time with the woman I love, doing the thing I love. -Get to spend time with the woman I love, doing the thing I love. -Experiencing her catch fish is.. well.. pretty friggen cool. The bad. - More money. She fishes wrong handed reels. - More money. She now realizes she can't do it all with one setup. - We have young kids, so it's hard to get a sitter as often as we'd like. - When we take the kids to a local, family spot, I seem to have my rod retired for the day (not that bad, actually. Seeing her catch one is ALMOST as good as me catching one. Neutral.) - She may know more about fishing in 3 months than I do. I will be asking her for advice. - Did I mention it costs a little more, speak of getting her a kayak have now come to the table. In summary, its a great thing that she digs it as much as I do. I just know my PB will soon be surpassed by me giving her "the spot". ah, oh well. Quote
triglet Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 my gf is the same way. always asking when we are going next. and yes it gets expensive cause she says she needs more than one rod and reel so she doesnt have to keep re rigging. tried buying a zebco 33 but she busted three of them catching bass. then had to get her an 808 for catfishing. now we have went to spinning reels for her to use. weird thing is she wants to learn to use a baitcaster now. will it never end Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted June 8, 2010 Super User Posted June 8, 2010 Glad to hear the good news guy's keep taking them and live life the way it was intended too... Newangler, In the immortal words...From the movie "Jaws"...I think your going to need a bigger boat. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted June 8, 2010 Super User Posted June 8, 2010 Over the decades, I've had the pleasure of fishing with a great many male fishing partners, jeez they could probably fill a small stadium. Still and all, my wife has been the best fishing partner I've ever found. Our boat bears the handle "Team Rolo", where we pool our efforts for the "boat", and where there's never any feelings of competition or jealousy. At the end of a super day, we were on our way home and I remember feeling like I was on top of the world. Then it hit me, I didn't land one legal fish that day, Lois boated everything. The same thing has also happened to Lois. In sharp contrast, I watched Roland Martin this morning, who was fishing with Mike McClelland for spotted bass on Lake Lanier. The ONLY thing on Roland's mind was catching more and bigger fish than Mike. Whenever McClelland tried to explain his spotted bass technique with the McStick, Roland never had the decency to stop fishing. Instead, Roland tried desperately to regain the spotlight, and would start shouting over Mike's voice: I Got One, I Got One, I Got One. Anyway, Mike caught the two largest spotted bass that day, and when the show ended Roland conveniently failed to mention Mike McClelland's name. If my wife behaved anything like Roland Martin did that day, I'd be fishing alone most of the time. Roger Quote
shimmy Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Very true Rolo. It really is a phenomena where we can get outfished by our wife and still have an incredible time. If you want a logical explanation, i just don't have one. Josh, i don't think there are any negative aspects to your wife fishing. I have yet to find a con since having a wife that loves to fish only means more fishing trips. Our family has fishing tournaments all of the time and have the BFOD (big fish of day) and BFOT (Big fish of trip). When i got my wife on fishing, i started her on stream fishing to get her cast down solid. Sure enough, come bass fishing time, i had the biggest bass until late in the summer where my wife pulled out a giant with the ten inch worm and beat everyone in my family. Then came winter time for trout fishing through the ice. I was winning with my 24 incher until the last trip and she beat it with a 24.5 incher. She does this to me. It blows my mind yet i get sooooooo excited when she does. There is no cons when it comes to your wife enjoying fishing. Quote
bigfruits Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 my gf is my main fishing partner. she shares my gear so no extra funding needed. when its raining, cold, crappy out and no one else wants to go, she's always down! i think the positives will eventually outweigh the negatives for you. Quote
DRhodes Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Even though its expensive to purchase the left reels, you get plenty of nice rods that you both can use, and some new tackle . In reality its a pretty cheap hobby Quote
Fishing Cowgirl Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Finding a local, small couples fishing club is always fun. Ours goes out once a month, the lakes are selected in advance, always spread out so no one couple always has to travel far. We fish from safe light till noon,(about $25) then all go out to eat. We have husband/wife teams, Mom/Son, BF/GF and dad and daughter teams. Lately it has been the 60+ Grandmom who has whupped everyone with big fish 7 to a 9lber each time) and we all get a hoot when they re-tell how it happened. I could hear one lady squalling: " Oh My!! Get the net! Get the Net! clear across the lake. It was great, she'd caught a 10.3lb bass. AND Yes, My husband said I now have more rods than he does, but didn't complain when I bought him a new flipping stick. Quote
NewAngler Posted June 10, 2010 Author Posted June 10, 2010 Troy, thats awesome your wife has the same "big bait, big fish" mentality you do. Just wait until your kid (daughter, right) comes and is old enough to tote along. You'll be watching your kid, and she will be fishing. Its almost, if not more excited seeing her catch one. I've yet to catch a snakehead, but she's got a nice 6 lber to her name. She does not rub it in, throw it in my face, but yet somehow has a cocky strut when we go to the spot we caught it. Cowgirl, thats a good idea. I didn't think about that. Most of our fishing together happens about every other week when we can drop the girls off at my parents. However, when we go together she fishes about 70% of the time, and I'm chasing kids and trying them no to "disturb mommy's water." Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted June 10, 2010 Super User Posted June 10, 2010 NewAngler, Mine are 16 and 21 and trust me it never gets old I would still rather see them and the wife catch the big ones and leave me with the net. The smiles on their faces are worth it every time. Quote
