Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted May 30, 2010 Super User Posted May 30, 2010 So summer is rolling in, hotter than I can remember it being for a long time. I've come to realize, my normal clothing is just too hot. Short sleeve, long sleeve, it don't matter. I've never bought any of the "fishing" clothing before, but I think it's getting close to time for me to pick some up. It's just starting to get unbearable during the day. If I'm on my home lake, it's no problem. Dock the boat and go cool off in the house. I've found a lake nearby though that is just loaded with bass, big bass, but last time I went out I came home feeling like I was in a title fight. What I'm looking for is something that'll keep me cool during the day. Something affordable. Something that preferably doesn't look ridiculous. Appreciate any input you guys have. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted May 30, 2010 Super User Posted May 30, 2010 I'm a fan of Columbia's PFG series (Performance Fishing Gear) featuring Omni-Shade technology. Long sleeve and short sleeve shirts as well as pants and shorts ~ perform as advertised. Check it out. BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted May 30, 2010 BassResource.com Administrator Posted May 30, 2010 Man I wish I had your problem. I seriously do. We've had an unseasonable cold and wet spring. One front after another with constant rain and temps hovering around 60. It's been that way for months. :-/ But - when it does get hot, I go with Columbia sportswear. Quote
florida strain Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 i like the cheaper versions from bells outlet..15$ shirts ...they are lighter weight than columbia and cheaper so it doesnt matter if they get to messed up..sometimes you can find them in the dot section too.. Quote

Sounds like what we had down here earlier this year. Not fun at all. I wouldn't mind the 60 degree temps though. As good as the fishing has been down here lately, I know it's going to be a brutal summer. Water temps in the areas I hit are already getting close to the 90 degree mark. I'll have to check out some of the Columbia stuff. May be a little bit more expensive than I was planning on spending. Luckily I really only need a shirt, the shorts I really don't care about. It's my upper body where I feel the heat the most. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Columbia PFD gets my vote. Under Armor cold gear and heat gear is also a good choice for layering up or dressing light. Also, they make an ear muff that cyclists wear. You can wear your ball cap and keep your ears warm. They work great. Cold spring Glenn? I went out day before yesterday, 50 degrees, dropped to 47 degrees, 20 MPH wind and rain ALL DAY. The water temp dropped almost three degrees in 5 hours. :-/ Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted May 31, 2010 BassResource.com Administrator Posted May 31, 2010 Yep. The "60 degree" mark is an average. I see you're from the same area I am, so you know the last week or so has been really cold for this time of year. We had such a mild winter, I was expecting a dry, warm spring. But nooooOOO! ;D Yes, Columbia gear is a little more pricey than cheaper stuff, but the quality is there and they last forever. The shirts are what I get. They're very comfortable and keep you cool and free of sunburns. Just hope I get to use mine sometime. : Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted May 31, 2010 Author Super User Posted May 31, 2010 Thats my major concern. I don't mind shelling out the cash for a quality product thats going to last me for a while. Quote

I got a dozen locations near me plus the main factory distribution outlet in town as well. Quote
I.rar Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 i know exactly what you mean about that heat. not only do i fish in it , i have to unload trucks in it too and it really is unbearable. ive been thinking of picking up one of those long sleeve columbia shirts but just the thought of long sleeves out in this heat/humidity makes me sweat. let us know what you decide on! Super User Fishes in trees Posted May 31, 2010 Super User Posted May 31, 2010 I like the Cabela's Guidewear, but the Columbia stuff is good too. I think the Guidewear has better pockets. I like the vertical zippers. When it comes to warm weather fishing specific clothing, affordable is a relative term. A shirt & shorts set in the Guidewear or Columbia PFG will cost in the neighborhood of $50 to $70 bucks. My guess is that the Bass Pro or Under Armor stuff would be in the same ball park and I know that very occasionally that stuff goes on sale. If you want to spend more money you can, check out Aqua Designs with the high tech fabric and specialized aqua camo patterns. That's just one of many specialized fishing clothes companies out there. It becomes a question of how much do you want to spend. Do you look dorky? Well, yeah, but no more so than golfers clothes or cyclist clothes. You get what you pay for and the sunblock fabric that wicks away sweat works really well. I generally bring several sets of clothes with me for summer fishing trips. At the end of the day, when everything is packed up and the boat is on the trailer, I like to change my clothes, especially if I'm going to stop at a restaurant on the way home. I find I get better treatment if I don't stink so bad. This rule doesn't apply so much at marina restaurants. Quote
HitmanFO Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 My favorite fishing shirt is a long sleeve Magellan shirt from Academy. It cost about $16. It is made out of some kind of micro-fiber, something like that, feels like silk. Even with the sleeves down, the vents in back of the shirt catch the air and funnel it thru the shirt, making it cool to wear either way. I also have a Columbia fishing shirt ($40), but I've never worn it fishing... it's my "angler dress-up" shirt for going out in public. ;D The Columbia is nicer, but the Magellan gets the job done! Hook Set Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 columbia Omni-dry gets my vote, you can catch them on sale at a decent price. Well worth it. I wore mine this weekend in 90 degree weather, still got hot, but my shirt did not stick to me, they vent really nicely. Quote
florida strain Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 i wouldnt mind trying some of columbia sun gloves what shaw wears....my dad is tore up with sun cancer, and im so dark from it a guy stopped to ask directions and said ...do you speak english? Quote
NateFollmer Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 I just bought a "River Shirt" by Natural Gear at Sams Club for 14 dollars, I thought it was going to be cheap junk but it has been working out great. It has plenty of pockets, the pocket snaps are magnetic and it has some vertical pockets/vents. It does a great job of repelling water too. I hate paying a lot for outdoor clothes because I always get them too dirty or I rip them up from walking through forests to get to my good spots Quote
Blue Streak Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Boy I gotta get in the loop. Are you guys serious? You can actually put clothes on to keep yourself cool? When I get hot I strip down to shorts. Do these things really work? Quote

Yeah, the Columbia shirts are nice and I have a couple, but stripping down to shorts and wearing a high enough SPF sunscreen to avoid burning keeps me cooler than anything. Quote
Red Bear Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 aside from clothing, it doesnt hurt to keep a cool wet rag draped over your neck and shoulders either... Quote
brushhoggin Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 worldwide sportsman makes nice shirts out of the same material as the colombias PFG but less expensive. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted June 1, 2010 Super User Posted June 1, 2010 worldwide sportsman makes nice shirts out of the same material as the colombias PFG but less expensive. It may be the same material, but the WWS shirts wear heavier than the Columbia and do not breathe quite as well. Quote
