Where would you look for bass?

Hey guys,

I've been out fishin about 4 times this month. Twice with my boat (one of which I had a fishfinder) & Twice from shore. Now I know that fishin in the late afternoon is better for early spring but, I'll take what I can get & that usually means mornings before work.

I was hoping that someone could take a look at a topo map of Horn Pond & give some suggestions on where to start looking for bass? I've tried north/west side of pond but only caught a small bass. I know that I'm looking for shallow flats where bass usually spawn & to look for the warmest water which I found last week to be the cove or bay on the south end of pond ( I did find a bass on Friday morning in that area). The water is stained which makes it hard to see structure & cover. Any help would be great!

I like that one section on the straight up North side of the lake where it goes 5/10/15/20/25 feet.  that's where I'd start. Bass like those flats with deep water access.  Park the boat near shore and make casts to the deep water and bring the bait up to the shallows.  See what happens.  No guarentees but I like fishing spots like that in the spring.

Also, that sick little spot smack dab in the middle of the lake where it's only 5 feet deep and then drops to 25 feet on one side and 45 on the other.  VERY interesting spot there imo especially because it's right off a fat point.  I like it.

Thanks for the help. I haven't fish this pond this early in the year before so, I'm having a hard time locating fish. The deeper water close to shallow flats is hard to reach from shore. But even when I'm out in my boat still can't seem to find em. I'll keep pluggin along!!

Seems like there are several spots where the lines come close together (steep drops) along the shoreline. This is where you should start to focus your efforts.

Pond is probably still in pre-spawn, but you should check the water temp right off when you arrive. Should be in the upper 50's out your way, so the bass are likely on the first breaks at the edges of the spawning flats, getting ready to move up. If the temps are in the low 60's, then you should start to focus on any flats you can get access to; and look for beds with your polaroid glasses.

You folks out east are kicking butt on the big LM's this time of the year. A lot of them are using big swimbaits and spinnerbaits. Hard jerkbaits can pay off big time as well.

Its only 100 acres, seems like you cover most of the pond in a day.  I'd be looking at flats areas adjacent to point.

I've highlighted some general areas that I would focus on. Of course, I don't know the structure or if any inlets are flowing into the pond. Hope this helps...

Hey MeanMouth, good idea using the computer to highlight and make notations on the map, I have a couple lakes I fish where I've downloaded a good map so I can take a copy with me but it never seems as easy to read when your sitting in the boat. I'm gonna do some serious studying and make some notations to print up on my maps next time. Thanks for the idea!

That's great! I'm really happy that you went and got yourself a nice one in that spot!

And as far as the highlights go (I use photoshop), but you can just add colored circles, and then increase their transparency so you're able to see through them.
