rowyourboat Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 im taking someone out to the lake tomarrow who has basically zero experience. I went out today to find some bites because i really, really want him to enjoy his first time. i only caught 2 because the conditions arent great. water temp is right around 50 and the water is murky. i caught both fish on a black/blue jig&pig. but my question was what is a lure that would be easy of him to use in these conditions that may get him a fish or 2. Thanks guys! Quote
BassnMan Mike Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 One technique that I find is usually effective when taking newbies out is a 3 or 4 inch worm on a light line split shot rigged. Simple and effective. Quote
florida strain Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 maybe a Carolina rig .. or something t- rigged as well it would be less casting ,and something that could be drug around a little more.. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted April 3, 2010 Super User Posted April 3, 2010 I'd have him try a wacky rigged 5" Senko (black). That will usually put a fish or two in the boat. Quote
Carrington Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 none of my friends fish, so when i take them out i just tell them to go buy some live minnows. This is the best way for a beginner imho. Quote

Nine Miler Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 I would go with night crawlers under a bobber. Throw a few split shot on there and you're set. Take a couple ultralights and catch pan fish. It has probably been a while since you have done that, but I bet it will be fun. Pull in a bunch of fish until you both get tired of it and want to catch something bigger. You will probably have to ask your partner- Say something like "you had enough of these little guys? Want to go for something bigger?" When the answer is yes, you have your chance to set him up with a proven and simple setup, like a weightless Texas, or wacky rigged Senko. This way, you can teach him the ins and outs of most productive lure ever, while catching a few bass. (Even a dink LM feels big after a boat load of sunfish.) Once he gets one, he will be hooked. He is definitely not nearly as keyed in on techniques, patterns etc. as you are. This is a great opportunity for both of you. For him, to learn a bit about fishing and enjoy the time on the water, and for you to relax and have fun watching someone else having a blast because you gave him the opportunity. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted April 3, 2010 Super User Posted April 3, 2010 Sounds to me like you want him to experience catching a bass. That's great, but maybe you should re-think this just a bit and take the suggestions of "Nine Miler" above. You may prefer bass fishing, but being a newbie, he would probably be very happy just catching "something". And that would go a long way with getting him hooked on fishing, which I'm assuming is your goal. If you are dead set on starting him off on bass fishing with artificials, then by all means, go with the 5" Senkos. Quote
RichF Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 When I take out my friends that don't fish often I always give them a spinnerbait. No matter how crappy the day is, it always seems to get a fish or two. Quote
fish jones Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Like previously stated, live bait would be simplest, but I would suggest a cheap plastic swimbait with a spinner real....he will learn to cast, plus at first he just needs to reel the thing in and get bites...... Quote
the lone fisherman Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 spinner baits and topwater good for him cause cant go wrong with them Quote
ziltoid Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 I'd have him try a wacky rigged 5" Senko (black). That will usually put a fish or two in the boat. I agree with this advice. Quote
chubaka Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 5in senko weightless or wacky rig should do the trick. Quote
timothy_spain Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 i agree with nine miler. start small and catch loads of dinks, then go for the big guys. Quote
Pez Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 5in senko weightless or wacky rig should do the trick. x2 Quote
