I've been out of commission for a good while, and trying to restart my interest in fishing. It's something I've enjoyed, but wondering what others do for motivation? Still have all my cranks, my plastics (presume they are still good), my inexpensive reels, rods, etc. What gets some of you guys re-motivated to fish when you've been away for a while?

Generally, I don't have to try to motivate myself.  It's just there.  In the summer, however, when it's 95 degree's and the only time the fish seem to be biting is a narrow window just after sunrise and 10 minutes before sunset, it's a different story.  When the bass aren't biting, I mix things up and get out my fly rod and fish for bluegill.  Or, right now, I pursue crappie with my spinning rod.  Or chase white bass in the tributaries.  But if I had to force myself to go, I probably wouldn't.

while i usually want to go there are times when I wake up and wonder if i should just sleep in. usually for me I will start thinking about a specific dock or tree that has produced in the past or how boring it would be to be stuck in the house.

Reading this forum really makes me get motivated.  Just hearing about everyone's catch and talking about their new lures and techniques gets me craving to go fishing!  I really don't need any motivation though, it's just the forum puts me over the top excited.

I'm gettin up at five tomorrow morning and i guarantee i will not be able to sleep tonight just cause of the anticipation. AND, I'll  jump out of bed like i gotta drill Sargent on my butt, even with no more than a couple hours of sleep. its a passion driven urge. if its not there, whats the point? i dont remember my life before i started bass fishing, and how i lived without it.

You act like you are going back to a job! If you're not motivated to go already.....I don't see it happening. but good luck!!

We are getting up at 5am tomorrow to drive 100 miles to Flaming Gorge (first outing for the boat this year) I'm excited as hell!!!

I know how you feel Mitch, as I've been in that same spot.  I fished tournaments for many years until a life long friend and fishing partner got sick.  During the time that he was going through the slow process of losing his battle with that illness, it would almost feel like I was cheating if I went out fishing without him.  But I have found a few things that are bringing me back.

The good news for you is that you're here looking for that spark again to restart your fire.  Most likely it means that a few small sparks have already been struck.  There's a good chance your interest will continue to grow.  Maybe not to where it may have been before, but there are many levels of enjoyment.

My advice is to take it slowly, maybe set a few modest goals, and just find that enjoyment as you can.

In my case, I've gotten back into the game by targeting of all things a 12" bluegill.  Kind of funny for an old bassoholic, but it was a start for my return.  I most likely will never return to tournament fishing, but I'm sure I'll find my spot.  You will too.

Good Luck!

I was surprised I didn't read it before Lund Expl...target any species. Just go fishing!

You'll know how you feel and react accordingly. You may not want to be as deep into it as you were, maybe just a hobby now instead of an obsession.

Good luck with this. Enjoy yourself.

when i just get out my tacklebox and look it over and organize it , or browsing and buying new lures, this just absolutly make me want to go fishing, it just eats me alive until I go, and I am always thinking about it until I go  ;)

Well, we sold our boat and a few years of not fishing put me into that "lets give this lake stuff a try again". Fishing is one of the few things in the world that I can do and just be calm, cool and relaxed.. Nothing to be stressed about or overthink. Can't live without some form of fishing.
