fish jones Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 I have 2 wierd catches. I was throwing a deep diver at the end of a tournament and hooked into what I thought was BB of the day. I had the net ready when all of a sudden I could see my crankbait, but that was it. It kept pulling and tugging, and I couldn't figure it out. Finally I brought it up and I had picked up a rattle trap off the bottom. I pulled the line in and at the end was a broken rod and a $100 dollar reel. It must had been dropped in the water the day before. That was 7 years ago, and I use the reel to this day. The second one I was throwing a crankbait on a private lake. I hooked a bass about 14 inches and when he got about 20ft from boat he jumped and I couldnt see the crankbait so I threw out a cuss word thinking the fish got the bait down his throat. I flipped him in the boat and there was no crankbait. The crankbait was attached my manns speed clip and somehow the bait came off and the clip pinched the fish in the lip. I got a pic on my cell phone of it dude, i want my reel back! Quote
krd22 Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 I caught an alligator gar on a spro frog. It was about 3' long and was the hardest fighting fish I have ever caught. I lost my frog that day because those things have tons of teeth. Quote
Bass-1 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 While fishing this past Friday with a buddy. I was throwing a suspending rogue and got a hit. When I started to reel the fish in, I could see it was a 2 pound smallie but it didn't look right. Turns out I had hooked the loop of the leader of an Eagle Claw hook sticking out of it's mouth...that was special... Quote
fish jones Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 this is saltwater, but i have caught a pelican, a seagull, and have hooked but never landed (lol) many a seal. Quote
dieselfisherman Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 I was fishing the sesquehanna river last year at the sunbury dam and caught a smallmouth head(either that or i set the hook too hard ) I have a 70 acre pond at our proporty and i threw a spook out by the dam and had a nice 4lb bass on when all of a sudden a 7foot gator grabs the back end of the bass, fought it for about 10 mins then finally when i got it close to shore it let go and again all i had was a fish head! bassmaster85 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 i was fishing on Potholes Lake in E. washington last summer and I caught this really wierd suckerfish that was white and silver. My buddy and I couldn't figure out what this fish was and we flagged down several fisherman and no one had a clue what it was. caught it on trout bait and a worm. Still don't know what it was. Quote
RippinLips86 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Ive landed many of pelican and seagulls throwing surface irons. Least we now know where the term bird brain comes from. ;D ;D ;D Quote
sundog49 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 I caught a shovel head catfish in the Ohio River with a Zebco 404. It felt like a VW. Quote

blkbearklr2001 Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 A big black cat, was night fishing on a small lake and I heard the zara spook hit the ground I went to pull it back into the water, and for some reason I felt a tap on the line and like an idiot I set the hook and the fight was on. That was one ticked off cat.. Joe Quote
bonzai22 Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 ive caught so many weird things but some that stick out are bike tires, a rock, a dead walleye off the bottom dont know how it happened, and a cottonmouth Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted April 8, 2010 Super User Posted April 8, 2010 Where to start. Most of the weird and/or interesting things I've hauled up have been when I was a commercial lobsterman. I've hauled up railings from vessels which sunk years ago. Anchors, have several of them which were snagged by the ground line, but the most unique was a two part catch. In Buzzards bay, a sail from a 42 or 44 foot Hinkley sailing yacht was wrapped around the ground line. It was in perfect condition, and we wondered how it got lost. Then next time we hauled gear in that area we found out. We hauled up the storage bag for that sail. It must have gotten knocked over the side of the sailboat, while stowed in the bag. Tidal currents worked the sail from the bag, and the rocky bottom kept them in the same proximity. The most unique while bass fishing was snagging a jig I had lost the day before. Quote
unageo09 Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 My grandfather caught a rock last week. The next fish he hooked he said "well, at least this one if fighting back". Quote
kickinbass22 Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 I didnt catch it, but i was fishing with one of the pros at the forest wood cup in pittsburgh last august and he pulled a condom out of the river lol he decided to just cut that one off Quote
Osprey39 Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 On a recent trip to Texas I caught what appeared to be a metal grill like what would go inside a microwave. I also hooked a turtle that was sunning himself on shore on an errant cast with a Rat-L-Trap. When I used to live in Florida, I caught an octopus once. That was pretty crazy. I learned that day that octopus tentacles make great bait for grouper and snapper. Quote
jb7725 Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 went fishing wednesday fished with a 3/0 ewg and a paca craw had a hit set the hook and got sheered off on some rocks next day i go back to the same lake fishing the same bait get a hit land the fish only to find my hook and bait in this fish!!! got my hook and bait back and im still laughing about it Quote
J-B Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 Caught this on a ribbit frog with a 5/0 hook this weekend. You can still see the frog hanging over the top of its mouth where the hook got set. It was roughly 4' long and we guessed about 30lbs. Quote
St.Joeriversmallie Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Fishing the St. Joe River one day i was drifting down river throwing a bandit. All of a sudden i felt something. I gave it a little pressure and started to reel. Figured out i had someones braid i hooked. Reeled until i got my crankbait and then grabbed the braid and started to pull. Then i realized there was a fish on the other end of the line. I saw it surface about 50 ft away and it looked big. I didnt think trying to pull it in by hand was a good idea so quick thinking i wrapped the braid around my hand and bit my mono off. Then threaded the braid down my guides and hooked it on the clip on the spool. Cranked it a couple times to get wrapped a few around the spool and then reeled in the biggest fish i have ever caught(or should i say reeled in). 30 plus inch catfish that had a tiny 1inch crankbait in its mouth. It must have been snagged on a log pile mid river and i just happened to come along and snag the line. He didnt have much fight in him so i think he may have been snagged for a while. It was crazy. True story i swear. Quote

Super User RoLo Posted April 13, 2010 Super User Posted April 13, 2010 This hook-up was not with a fishhook but with a boat anchor. I was fishing at anchor for kingfish and due to a strong tidal flow we began to drag anchor. Eventually the anchor got a new bite on the bottom and the boat remained in place. When I finally decided to pull-anchor and leave, I had to heave with all my mite to hoist the hook. Finally after a long strenuous haul, I had the anchor up to the water surface and there was a fat black cable draped across the anchor flukes. As I reached to remove the cable, it suddenly slipped off the flukes and ripped a slot in the ocean as it flew back to the sea floor. I then unfolded my NOAA map and learned in retrospect that I was anchored in a "Restricted" area that was dotmarked with an "electrical cable". Roger Quote
