MattinOK Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 What were some of your first, and funniest, fishing mistakes? The first one i remember is this. Within my first month of fishing, I decided it was time to learn to fish a soft plastic worm. So I merrily went to Wal Mart to pick up some 7" powerworms, hooks, and weights. Somehow along the way, I purchased size 4 hooks instead of 4/0. You should have seen me texas rigging a 7" worm with a perch hook. Fished it nearly a month like that fore' someone showed me what I was doing wrong. Another incident I remember that is quite funny. I had found a nice deep diving crankbait at a yardsale for $1. I was fishing at a lake with LOTS of lilypads. I remembered something about bass loving to hang out in lily pads. So what did I do? That's right, ran that deep diver right through em'. You've never seen someone quite so crestfallen as I was that day. Quote
The Bassinator Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I used to t-rig a trick worm with a 6/0 hook and I would leave it all twisted instead of straight. Funny thing is I still caught fish but didnt know why I was missing so many. I also put twenty pound mono on a spinning reel and didnt know why I couldnt cast that far Quote
b.Lee Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 honestly I always research everything before I tried it. So I suppose the only mistake I ever made was not learning how to throw a baitcaster before trying Quote
Stasher1 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 What were some of your first, and funniest, fishing mistakes? Believing Bill Dance. Those stupid Dancin' Eels are worthless. I don't think you could even catch grass with them if you cast one out onto the lawn. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted April 15, 2010 Super User Posted April 15, 2010 When i was 6 I threw the entire rod and reel in the water...I "forgot" to hang on to it. I was 10,got my first spinning reel combo.First cast i somehow manage to hook myself in the arm.To the E.R. i went...I didn't know i was suppose to open the Bail arm before casting. Also guilty of trying a Baitcaster before understanding how to use it....I used up an entire 1200 yrds of line in 3-4 hours of fishing. Backlash after backlash.I ended up throwing it in the garbage before heading home.$50 right in the garbage can. : Quote
hoss87 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 one time when i was a kid i didnt know how to tie a hook and i thought i did. tied on a cast master and threw it out while using my dads 100 dollar trout rod and reel. threw it out and the knot came undone. not only that i didnt put the pole together right and the top half came off and went right into the water. my dad was ticked. he tied on a castmaster and tried for hours to get it back. and finnally did to. Super User Fishing Rhino Posted April 15, 2010 Super User Posted April 15, 2010 I've made many mistakes while fishing, but selective amnesia prevents me from recalling the specific incidents. Some days, going fishing was the mistake. You know, the days when everything that can go wrong does. Quote
D4u2s0t Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I made a good one last year, so not when I was learning, but worth it to tell. Man, was I heated!! Some may remember my post last fall about a fish that did not move for days, and just pecked at my bait. Everyone said 'gill, perch, or rock lol. But I knew that wasn't hte case. Finally I ticked the fish off enough to bite, set the hook, and said to myself Must have a stump... won't budge! couldn't move the line, couldn't work it free, so I walked down the dock and started to walk along the shore. When I got on the beach, all of a sudden my line took off for the dock!! I ran back to the dock as i'm reeling in the line, but it was too late, fish spit it. I continued reeling in, in complete shock, and the fish came back for a 2nd hit as I was pulling the bait from the water. It was a muskie, and would have been my first. Right at the dock he pulled a 180, and made a big commotion in the water. Didn't get to see how big it was, just caught enough of a glimpse to know it was a muskie. So why was I so upset? Because afterwards, I realized i was fishing in the swimming lanes, and there's zero stumps, sticks, rocks, basically nothing possible to get caught up on... Man was I ticked to lose my first muskie... Quote
Gangley Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I remember fishing as a kid and putting 20 lbs test on a zebco 33 for perch fishing on a creek behind my house. Figured that an overhand knot was the tightest knot you could do, so since they kept breaking off, it must be that the line was too weak. The second one as a kid was putting field crickets (approximately 1 cm long) on 5/0 worm hooks because the bigger the hook, the bigger the fish I could catch. Quote
The Bassinator Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I almost forgot recently I was using a slightly older rod that was a two piece spinning outfit where the top piece would not fit snuggly into the bottom and the screw to keep the reel on the reel handle was stripped. So one day I decided to use it to practice skipping. It was going well until one cast where the top piece went flying off and the reel fell of simultaneously It was pretty cold out and my hands were already frozen so handling a wet rod and reel was not too fun. So with some electrical tape and plumbers tape later I was able to go fishing again ;D Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Biggest mistake I made -going fishing with Dozer-funniest thing that happened -he caught a fish- overall synopsis-PRICELESS Quote
bwillis Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 When I got back into fishing last year after not doing it for like 12 years, I bought a spinning reel and a casting rod. Didn't work out too well, had to go back to the store the next day and buy a spinning rod to go with the reel. Quote

I don't think you could even catch grass with them if you cast one out onto the lawn. LOL My friend in KY just sent me a cell pic of a 6-7 lb LMB his wife caught on a DANCIN" EEL :-? Quote
Cheese68 Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 When I picked up fishing again in my early 30's with my two girls, we were fishing out of a canoe for bass or whatever. Had gone to Wal-mart and stocked up on whatever lures we found. One was a football head jig. Didn't realize that trolling with a jig (without the pig) wouldn't be all that effective (this was not a swim jig)!!! Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted April 16, 2010 BassResource.com Administrator Posted April 16, 2010 I'm still waiting to make my first mistake. ;D Quote
FishingBuds Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Cleaning my first fish. : and not tying off my fish keeper line, looked funny as heck seeing it swim away, so another goo reason I stay with catch and release ;D Quote
basspro215 Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 my biggest one is trusting people, one time well fishing in oswego,NY i caught a huge king salmon and put it on the bank well i wadded out to get some more and wen i went back to get it someone stole my salmon Quote
SGT Rico Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 I had such a big head when I was a teenager, my father would try to teach me different knots for my rigging, but I would never listen. I lost so many fish to unproper knots, when I finally listened to him and learned how to tie the good ole trusty palomar and the uni-knot, my days of losing fish due to knots were over!! Quote
kms399 Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 I used to troll for pike with my grandpa and we used bait casters well i caught a nice probably 6-7 lber i got it next to the boat saw how big it was and when it ran i put my thumb on the spool so it wouldn't get away well of course the line snapped. first lesson in trusting your drag.
