Flipping and Pitching Mats

I have a house on Lake Seminole (georgia side) and was wondering if this is an ok flipping lake.

Sometimes I dont know what kind of things to look for, because before you get up to the visual out of water mat, there is so much hydrilla you cant fish it.

It seems like an awsome technique but vvery slow or even a waste of time if you dont know there is fish under the mat.

What do you look for?

The only way I could know when to flip something is if I fished a frog and got alot of bites I would refish that mat or grassline.

Fish it vertical or with a frog, trap, or some other topwater selection.

Look for the points, drains, humps, holes, or any other difference.

If it mats just tie on a 1/0 oz. - 1 1/2oz. jig, fish it vertical to. You'll know pretty quick if there are any fish there.

i try to punch through it with a heavy weight with something t- rigged..i look for the shaded side of mats, pads,stumps ect.

If the lake has mats then there will be fish under them. Often times you just have to cover water and find the fish.

Where the fish will be positioned is relative to the time of year. Mats close to spawning areas will hold pre and post spawners.

Mats close to deeper water may hold summer fish.

Like already mentioned, knowing what is below the mats really helps narrow down where fish will be in vast expanses of grass. A shallow ditch running through a grass flat may be a goldmine.

i wouldn't fish it slow.  run and gun, flipping and pitching into every hole, crevice, nook and cranny you see.  hit the hole, shake it, pull it out and find another hole if nothing hits.
