fish jones Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 I went fishing today with a buddy with much more bass fishing experience than me... I have fished a lot during my life (at least 43 species both fresh and salt water, but bass? his wheelhouse) We went to his spot hoping for bass. I caught a mere 5 fish, all on the same swimbait...He caught nothing until a late day pickerel... He didn't want to use my offer of using one of my lures since at least it was cathcing "something" A few beers after fishing he headed off to Wal-Mart... He called me to say they had the same thing I was using, and did I want him to pick up some for me... I said thanks but I would stop by soon to get my own. He said he wanted to buy some, ;D but wouldn't since it was " MY BAIT " I said "If i saw you catching more fish than me i would try them and not feel bad" he said " I just can't" lol... DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK THIS IS FUNNY? ;D Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted April 4, 2010 Super User Posted April 4, 2010 Hmmmmm... I can understand it somewhat. I'm a fly-tier and would ONLY fish flies I not only tied, but designed. It's a pure satisfaction thing, and requires some real obstinance too LOL. But with store bought lures? No. I'm not THAT obstinate. ;D I did once fish with a young kid who owned ONE lure, a cheap crankbait so badly out of tune it spun circles as he burned it. And he crushed 'em! I still only own perfectly tuned crankbaits. Welcome, by the way. Quote
RichF Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 It's definitely funny but I can relate with your friend. I have quite the ego when I'm bass fishing. For example, I refuse, refuse, refuse to use a senko. Is it silly? Absolutely! It's also a confidence thing I think. For example, if my dad starts catching more on a particular color, I will usually stick with my favorite color just because it's "my color." Quote
the lone fisherman Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 yea thats funny cant let pride get in the way of a good fishing day i would use your lure Quote
fish jones Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 thanks for the response Paul... this happens to be a product by Storm, so not exactly exclusive.... certainly not like tying your own fly's our anything... it would be the equivalent of seeing a buddy catch fish on a certain x rap and then refusing to use it.... he even laughed... he just couldn't do it... I told him well, then use it when you don't fish with me.... lol Quote
RichF Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 No problem. I can never seem to stop talking about fishing! Quote
fish jones Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 and rich, that is a heck of a good looking fish in your pic... kudos! Quote
RichF Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 and rich, that is a heck of a good looking fish in your pic... kudos! Thanks! Got that big girl last July up here in northern New York! There is some unbelievable bass fishing up here. Quote
fish jones Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 by the way, the lure i am talking about has allowed me to "forrest gump" my way to the out fishing (not every time of course, but still) of several experienced anglers over the last 3 years......none of them ever wants to use it... Quote
Super User grimlin Posted April 4, 2010 Super User Posted April 4, 2010 I won't touch a storm bait either..I hate them.Even if the guy next to me is wacking the fish on them. Quote
Taylor Fishin 4 life Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 i have never had much success with the storm baits except their wiggle wart cranks but i am willing to try anything if it catches fish Quote
fish jones Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 i won't spill it then.... storm makes a swim bait in various different species... it only costs around 3 to 4 bucks for three of them.... they have killed for me.... thats me.. everyone has there favorites.... i just know i have killed with these....... Super User cart7t Posted April 4, 2010 Super User Posted April 4, 2010 ...... A few beers after fishing he headed off to Wal-Mart... ...... lol... DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK THIS IS FUNNY? ;D Driving while intoxicated to Wal mart? No, not funny at all. Quote
Blue Streak Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 I have never had that problem, if I am catching fish on a bait that my friends don't have they are raiding my tackle box looking for another, and vice versa. Of course if I only have one I will offer them a very good price. Quote
Super User Tin Posted April 4, 2010 Super User Posted April 4, 2010 ...... A few beers after fishing he headed off to Wal-Mart... ...... lol... DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK THIS IS FUNNY? ;D Driving while intoxicated to Wal mart? No, not funny at all. Seeing as though I'm the only one out of the immediate five in my family that has not been hit and injured (my mom permanently) by a drunk driver, no it is not funny. I find this pathetic. It is my one big pet peeve, the guy who hit my step dad and brother was only .06 and was "buzzed". And you're just as bad for letting him drive. Couldn't wait until the next morning to get a lure and needed it that second? Quote

I will not tie one on and you will never catch me even lookin at one. Matter of fact, when i say i catch a fish, i have to tell people that it was caught on a sinko because i despise it so very much. A lot of fisherman have an ego, me as one of them. I just can't use what my competition is using. A lot of fishing is about self discovery and self achievement and that part is taken away when your buddy is telling you what to use. They might as well set the hook and hand you the pole. Some people don't mind that, i am stubborn enough that i would. It's pathetic Quote

It's not excess ego, or obstinance as much as a refusal to be swayed by poor judgment -i.e. superstition. I am really good at IGNORING the little doubting voice that's based in nothing worth considering -like the color of my underwear, or lure for that matter. Quote

fish jones Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 It was actually me who had the couple beers while my buddy (the driver) had a soda and a hot wings... I didn't think about the fact I was implying my friend was driving after drinking.... sorry. I don't condone driving even after a couple beers. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted April 4, 2010 Super User Posted April 4, 2010 It depends on the situation. I'm with shimmy on this: A guy insisting that you fish his bait would make me get a little stiff necked. On the other hand I've fished with guys who would not use a wacky rigged Senko when I was killing with it. I always offer before I start fishing that you are welcome to use any bait I have. If I out fish you, and you're too stubborn to use something of mine... : I was fishing a few weeks ago with a guy who was killing on 5" Chompers spider grubs. I was catching fish on similar baits, but not the same quality. He offered them to me. I took the offer and we both caught good fish. It did not have any negative impact on my self-image. 8-) Note: I now have several bags of Chompers in my bag. Quote
kikstand454 Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 i think that this entire way of thinking is messed up. why on earth would you not want to be using the bait that somone else has dialed in as the thing to use that day? i mean...wha? why throw something that isnt working as good or not at all? im all for fishing something different than the other guy in the boat. as a "back of the boat" angler... its life or death sometimes. but after about the 5th fish that i havent caught... i start thinking along the lines of why that lure is producing and not the one im throwing. then i try to figure out a lure thats close or complementary, so i can get the ones hes missing. if that doesnt work then i start looking for the same lure and if its offered to me... you can bet im going to take it. pride? ego? for a bait thats not working? : - thats like not asking for directions when youre lost.
