I need a step by step intro into Jig Fishin.  I purchased my first Jigs a year ago from a local bait shop, and the owner was nice enough to show me how to rig it.  They are local made Jogs with Ekins craw trailers.  His instruction was to fish it like a TexasRig.  Cst toward bank and retrieve slowly, bouncing it off the bottom on teh way to the boat.  I caught some fish on it last year but feel i may be missing the good fish with this method...

So...I need a step by step on pitchin, flippn, whatever...

I mean dumb it down.. cuz i am clueless...

To me jig fishing is all about recognizing the pick-ups.  Too many anglers try to fish jigs like plastics, expecting big thumps on the pick-up or violent strikes.  90% of the jig fish I've caught the only indicators were changes in the "feel".  Line goes slack or tight for no reason, or line moves left or right.  When you get one of those indicators with a jig, it's time to put hammer down.  You'll find yourself setting the hook on nothing but water a lot at first (don't forget to duck and yell INCOMING if you have a partner on the boat!) but as they always say: hook sets are free. Once you get a feel for how bass pick up jigs it's game over cause jigs IMO are the #1 LMB lure out there.  I fish them anytime, anywhere.

Well said KC .... anytime anything seems "different" it is time to jerk !!! And none of this drop the rod, reel up the slack, and set the hook ....... jerk and jerk right now !!

Is jig fishing primarily for Bass or will it catch other species as well?

Hope this isn't a stupid question

The jig (in it's many forms) will catch virtually any gamefish. I've caught LMB, SMB walleye, crappie, freshwater drum, striped bass, white bass, wiper, sauger, channel cat, bream, and others I'm sure I've forgotten. And that's just in freshwater.

IMHO, the jig is THE most versatile lure of all time.

One thing i have heard and believe in is to learn how your jig feels like without a fish on it. Feel how it relates to the structure, how it falls and and overall how it fishes. Once you learn that, if the jig feels any diffrent set the hook.

A long time ago, an old timer told me, "The jig bite feels like 'Honey' when you pick up the jig to move it."  That is the most frustrating thing when you don't trust that feeling.  The next thing you feel is the fish dropping the jig or the almost hookup.

reading these posts makes me wonder how many Bass I may have missed waiting on that solid worm bump.
