MitchIsFishin Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 I'm out today fishing for a couple of hours, tried a Netbait Baby Paca Craw. I don't believe I had it rigged right. I used an owners #1 wide gap bend hook, and it really almost seemed too large, especially compared to a #1 gammy. The craw was sliding down the hook after every 2-3 casts. I was constantly readjusting it. Had the tip barely through the skin on top, kind of tex-posed. I also think because of the way I had it rigged, the action wasn't what it was suppose to be. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted March 24, 2009 Super User Posted March 24, 2009 a size 1 is way too small. unless you were using the paca chunk. the paca senior gets a 4/0 and the jr gets a 3/0 for me edit: just realized that they call them the regular and baby, never seen the the Tiny which are you fishing? MitchIsFishin Posted March 24, 2009 Author Posted March 24, 2009 fourbizz, I was fishing the baby paca. Wow, a #3 hook? I thought the #1 was too large. Maybe I'm not setting this up right. BTW, the #1 size looks different between a gammy and an owner hook, could that be it? I'm lost. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted March 24, 2009 Super User Posted March 24, 2009 A photograph would be great in this situation. I will say this, a #1 hook on a baby Paca Craw is way way way way way way way way way way too small. Try a 3/0 or 4/0 Owner Rig'n Hook or Offset Shank Wide Gap. http://www.ownerhooks.com/pages/products/hooks/basshooks.htm Quote

BTW, the #1 size looks different between a gammy and an owner hook, could that be it? I'm lost. Your terminology is flawed. There is a huge difference between a #1 hook and a 1/0 hook. And FWIW, a 1/0 is far too small for a Baby Paca Craw. Quote
MitchIsFishin Posted March 24, 2009 Author Posted March 24, 2009 Thanks Burley, it was a 1/0 hook FWIW. Quote
MitchIsFishin Posted March 24, 2009 Author Posted March 24, 2009 Burley, I'll try the 3/0, it seems awfully large for a baby paca craw, but I'll give it a whirl........ Thanks to all. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted March 24, 2009 Super User Posted March 24, 2009 A 3/0 EWG(extra wide gap) is the perfect hook for the paca baby. When it comes to a short stout bait like the paca, which is essentially a tube bait, you need to have a wide enough bend on the shank of the hook.Too much plastic will clog it up on the hookset and the point will not pierce the fishs mouth. Trust us LOL i'll post a pic if you need it. Quote
MitchIsFishin Posted March 24, 2009 Author Posted March 24, 2009 Bassin_Fin@tic, if you can post a pic, that would be phenomenal! Would appreciate it. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted March 24, 2009 Super User Posted March 24, 2009 Fixed the first picture. It is a top view you can see how the hook sits. The point would be driven just about between the little eyes on the craw.Second picture is bottom view, just shows how it is skin hooked. The shape of the body allows an easy and perfect finish when hooked that way. For the hell of it I decided to show a few creations from the mad laboratory in the third pic. (yes those are a spinnerbait trailer and brush hog tails) Quote
Redhed Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 First picture sucks, but you can see how the hook sits. The point would be driven just about between the little eyes on the craw.Second picture just shows how it is skin hooked. The shape of the body allows an easy and perfect finish when hooked that way.For the hell of it I decided to show a few creations from the mad laboratory in the third pic. Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted March 25, 2009 Super User Posted March 25, 2009 Not sure what you mean but that bait can be rigged through either side top or bottom. One side rips, flip it over and rig it on the other. The hook always rides on the underneath when it is in the water. Couldn't quite figure out how to make it balance on that skinny hook whlie laying it on the table :-X Quote
MaineBassMan Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 I use a use a 2/0 -3/0 wide gap hook with mine. The only thing I don't like about the Paca craws is that the arms tear off too easily. Quote
bassnleo Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 I started using a Reaction Innovations BMF flippin hook, 3/0 and 4/0, with the pacas last year. Actually, I'm using the BMF for ALL flippin baits now. It seems to have decreased the number of fish I loose due to the plastic balling up on the hook like mentioned. Quote
Blues19 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I use 3/0 EWG hooks on both the baby and full size Paca Craws. Ive started to use the zoom super speed craw which has a very similar action, with a lean body and have not missed many fish. I will need to go with the 4/0 on the full size Paca Craw. Quote

I had like 3 packs on a bass trip and basically ran out by the end of the 2 days. If there are alot of bluegills and such nipping at them... good luck.. bout a pack and a half were ruined cause of those suckers.. I have to say, they still are my favorite plastic craw... but get frustrated with the pinchers comin off Quote
Super User burleytog Posted March 29, 2009 Super User Posted March 29, 2009 I guess you've never fished a Rage Craw. Quote
