pondmaster32 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 the local quarry by me is finally being opened to the public up after 10 years of being closed and the lake has been stocked with all kinds of fish. I've heard that people have been down there (illegally) and they caught some big fish. the lake is really clear and there is no boat pressure. how long will the fishing stay really good and what are some good lures to catch them on? aceman387 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 in clearer water the fish are spookier so fish before sunrise or at night . its also better to fish on cloudy or rainy days or with some wind blowing to break up the water surface. i fish in gin water like your talking about and have had alot of luck with smaller soft plastics (finesse fishing) in watermelon colored hues. some of my favorite lures in clear water like that are a 4''watermelon colored senko worm wacky rigged with an o ring, also a yamamoto shad shape worm in the same color texas rigged weightless .also charlie brewer slider worms in black and watermelon colored wacky rigged with o rings .some times when the bass want a faster moving lure i will put on a 3'' watermelon colored grub jig on a jig head and cast it out and count it down and swim it back to the boat. good luck! Mattlures Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I predict the fishing will be disapointing. We have had a few lakes open up that were closed for a long time and they were all disapointing. They were great when they were closed and most became good after a little while but the intial opening were all busts. Here is why. Those fish have had very little presure for a long time. They are conditioned to it. Now you bombard the lake with fisherman, noise, boats, lures, line etc. This is abig shock to the fish. They go on the defensive. Once they get used to it the lakes fish like normal lakes. Now if nobody showed up for the opener except you then you would probably have a great day Quote

I hope that's not in their management plan. If so it will be interesting to see how things pan out in the next year. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 17, 2010 Super User Posted February 17, 2010 The fish don't plant themselves. : Pressure is going to be the deal breaker here. I fish a restricted quarry (with permission) and outside of spring and fall, its tough. Water is VERY clear and very deep. It has some decent largemouth, but its loaded with smallies and big shad. BIG topwaters produce well in the evenings. Quote
RobbyZ5001 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Wow I thought the fish just fell out of the sky... When he says they are planting all kinds of fish all types of ideas come to mind. It is a vague statement, but I picture them putting a wide variety of species in. I guess if they are willing to consistently stock it would make sense, otherwise I am sure nature will decide what it wants to have in the quarry at what amounts. Quote
wvbucketmouth Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 A big black jitterbug at night is always fun. 8-) Quote
little_stephen Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 not sure, but weve got a similar lake here. Its going to be a state park. It was formerly closed to the public. it used to be owned by the Goodyear Company, it was their own private chunk of property. Formerly, it was only available for use by goodyear employees, family members of employees, retirees, and special guests. It has a nice chunk of land attached to it to that they called a "hunt club" area. and its home to one of the Goodyear Blimp Air Docks. If you've never been around the blimp, then u cant imagine how annoying it is. Youre trying to fish, and all you can hear is this intense buzzing! But back to topic.......... I was wondering the same thing. But this lakes a natural one, and im not sure how to approach it either from shore. they cleaned it up so much that I dont know what to throw to try and get the fish to bite. It almost looks like they pulled alot of the shore cover (mostly fallen trees) outta the lake! Idk. but ill let u know how my trips turn out when they open it up. Quote
