Bass_Akwards Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Perhaps this has been posted and if so, sorry, but this just ticks me off. Legal? Sure. Absolutely rediculous? Definately. Some people just have no clue IMO. Does this make anyone else mad? http://www.gon.com/a...id=2039&cid=158 Quote

Thai Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 If I owned that pond I would be ticked...those are some great genetics for an unmanaged pond.... But I don't so all I can do is shake my head... Quote
J-B Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 IMO, I agree that it should have been released, but on the other hand at least he used it as food to feed himself and quite possibly his wife. That is definitely a bass that anyone can be proud to have bragging rights for. Nobody can blame him for not knowing what the bass could have been. In a way, having it for dinner is more dignified than sending of to be tested and documented as the second largest bass caught in Georgia. Just my thoughts. Quote
brushhoggin Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 i agree its very unfortunate but it doesnt really make me mad cause he won't tell us where the lake is. Quote

Weighed on certified scale in front of warden, whom will collect a scale/tissue sample and then can be released....or in this case eaten... Quote

Copen1822 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Get over it : He caught a great fish and made a great meal out of it, as is his legal right to do. I don't like to kill em so I don't. You don't have to either! Quote

I don't like to kill em so I don't. You don't have to either! Just because it's legal doesn't mean the guy isn't an uncaring, ignorant, senseless angler either. Lots of people make legal yet stupid choices every day. Thanks for telling me to "get over it" though bro. Now that you said that, my life is SO much better. Was actually thinking of starting to see as shrink because of this but now that I've read your post, I might save a few bucks and just read a self help book instead. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted February 3, 2010 Super User Posted February 3, 2010 I sure don't condone keeping very large females but on the brighter side the fish was probably very old to have grown that big and didn't have much time left.At least someone got to enjoy it instead of just finding it out floating somewhere. :-/ Quote

Randall Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Although I don't keep any big bass I will not put down Otis for doing so. He was fishing a private pond that he had permission to fish. He was fishing for food and didn't know any better. To him it was food and nothing else. Now if he would have released it on the spot someone else would be saying that he never caught one that big and that Otis is a liar. Well, plenty have called him a liar also. I will try my best to release every fish possible alive myself but can't really blame Otis and it sure isn't going to bother me enough to get mad that he caught a big bass out of a private pond and kept it not knowing any better. I have also talked to a few people who have talked with Otis since this fish was caught and everyone said he seemed like a real nice guy. Quote

I would never keep a fish like that, but don't judge someone else who did, especially since he ate it. It's his right to keep the fish, the same as it's my right to put it back. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 3, 2010 Super User Posted February 3, 2010 Getting involved in any emotional debate is like discussing religion or politics...it's a no win. Catch & Release can be good or bad for a fishery, depending on the fishery. The value of big bass is different, nearly every angler knows their personal best catch weight. Big bass are a big part of bass fishing, a high value fish. George Perry fished at a time when fish were eaten, so he ate his catch. The 18 1/2 lb bass caught in Georgia would have been far more valuable to Otis if he kept it alive and not eaten it. I have never known any bass fishery to produce only one giant bass. The conditions must be good for several giants to grow in that lake. My question is; why hasn't anyone else caught a giant from that area? There should be several 12lb to 15lb+ bass living there!
