bigtimfish Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 I am seeing a lot of these out by the road today and was wondering if these would be good for brushpiles. Any input will be helpful. Thanks. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted January 2, 2010 Super User Posted January 2, 2010 Dont see why it wouldn't work. You may need to be careful where you put it though. It could be considered dumping. Some states/cities have laws against dumping pallets,blocks,buckets/pvc,tires,or other materials. I am going to keep my eyes out for some now.Real christmas trees are great but they don't last very long before they fall apart. Quote
RobbyZ5001 Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 Why would you throw away your fake christmas tree? Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted January 2, 2010 Super User Posted January 2, 2010 Ill-legal dumping maybe. Quote
bigtimfish Posted January 2, 2010 Author Posted January 2, 2010 Why would you throw away your fake christmas tree? We are throwing ours away because it is a pre lite tree and some of the lights went out. Quote
Simp Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 Why would you throw away your fake christmas tree? We are throwing ours away because it is a pre lite tree and some of the lights went out. Sounds like a great night fishing brushpile. Just install some solar panels! ;D Quote
tnbassfisher Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 I'd say that it would work like a regular tree would. But I would watch out for what chemicals might be in the fake tree. Make sure it isn't going to cause much harm. Quote
Luke at Gouldsboro Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 i wouldn't dump a fake tree in the water. You don't know what it's made of, and as a fisherman, it's ethically right to treat the water your on with respect. Like if I get a birds-nest in my line, I strip it, cut it off, then keep it in my boat until I can put it in the garbage. My advice is to keep the water clean, and let nature take care of the structure Quote
zach t Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Personally, I don't think its ethical to dump it. There are TONS of perfectly fine things to sink that you find everyday. Toilets. Concrete culverts. Concrete blocks. Quote
tyrius. Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Would bass really be able to utilize them effectively? The branches on x-mas trees are very dense meaning that the only fish able to get in there would be small fish. A bass would likely not be able to use it as an effective ambush spot. Also, they are mainly made out of plastic. Not really what you want to be dumping into your water. It would probably be considered littering. Quote
Wild Bill [NY] Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Check your state's regulations. Many states have laws that you cannot throw ANYTHING, into public waters; it's considered illegal dumping usually.[Yes, even real trees] Quote
b.Lee Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I am no with a fake tree. Especially ones with pre-lit lights on them Quote
Bassnajr Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I don't think that fake trees are good idea either, but how are they different from this product by Jimmy Houston and others: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_10204299____SearchResults Quote

Any of that stuff would get you ticketed in NY if you got caught, as it should. You're littering !! You do NOT own the waters, so don't throw stuff into it. Quote

It's when you putting them in public waters that you have to be careful and make sure you know your state's laws. Quote
Hot Rod Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 As noted it is illegal to dump anything in public waters or even waterdsheds (which is technically everywhere) in most states without the proper permit. Second, regarding the question about why it would be O.K to put in one of the fish habittats sold BPS and other places compared to an artificial tree in your own pond; there are 10's of thousands of different plastics with different chemical make ups. They have many different purposes. Artificial christmas trees are not designed to withstand outdoor or submerged applications. They could potentially leach a lot of toxins into the lake as they break down. Quote
A-Rob Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I'd prefer throwing fallen wood in the lake instead of plastic. I'm sure there is some nasty chemicals in a dyed plastic tree Quote
Bassnajr Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I believe that a good rule of thumb is if it couldn't end up in the water naturally, you probably shouldn't put in in any body of water. NOW...pulling trees, rock piles, boulders etc. out onto a frozen pond and letting them sink for the spring....I don't feel is a problem. Alan (bassnajr) Quote
