fisher of bass Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 hello, gonna go ice fishing this year, was wondering if it will work, and what have you used, i have a bunch of roboworms and other soft plastics, tia Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted December 19, 2009 Super User Posted December 19, 2009 Probably best to leave the bassin' gear to home and shift over to pike or walleyes. You may get into a few bass with Tip-Ups & Minnows, or perhaps a jigging Rapala, but bass get pretty lazy under the ice. If you ever get the chance to sit inside a spear house you can watch them slowly swim along the bottom. But it is very hard to get them to bite. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted December 19, 2009 Super User Posted December 19, 2009 I'm not an ice fisherman and know squat about it. I do however know a thing or two about catching bass. I can see no reason why a drop shot would not be a dy-no-mite presentation through hard water. It has everything a bass would want: Suspension just above the bottom. Natural presentation. Very little movement. Easy meal. I'd use a nose hooked Roboworm. I would not work it much....maybe a slight quiver every now & then. Please let us know how you make out if you give it a whirl! Quote
Hot Rod Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 I've heard for artificial the smaller of the gulp leeches in black is the ticket on a drop shot thru the ice. Though like someone else said, you'll often get them on minnow's or chubs through the ice while fishing for other species. Quote
swilly78 Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 I drop shot through the ice with TWO fatheads. One about 8 inches up, and one on a short leader about 16 inches up. I got one bass last year, and a couple of walleye. Very little movement, very slow. Quote
nashontheriver Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 there was a really good article from infisherman mag this month. they recommend 3 different drop-shot setups and have it diagrammed. give it a look. Quote

Super User CWB Posted January 8, 2010 Super User Posted January 8, 2010 Probably would depend on species. I use mostly tip-ups and live roaches for Pike and an occasional Bass or Walleye. While watching these, I jig small jigs tipped with waxworms or spikes for panfish. Usually one method or the other keeps me busy. Never tried dropshotting but I'm sure it would work. Give it a try. I probably will. Quote
fisher of bass Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 updated, went ice fishing today, dropshotted a sculpin worm with megastrike on it [ love this stuff], caught 3 pickeral, 2 small largemouths and 2 perch, 1 of the perch was bigger than the bass lol, but it does work, fished in 12 fow next to a weedline, freezing cold but lots of fun Quote

If you ever get the chance to sit inside a spear house you can watch them slowly swim along the bottom. But it is very hard to get them to bite. got 9 bass and a pickerel on tip ups yesterday within about 2 hours, and that's how it always is. I wouldn't call that very hard to get them to bite. We were literally running non stop, and lost a bunch of fish because we didn't get there in time. If we had more people, or could run faster (there was about 4 inches of snow on top of the ice, made it hard) we probably would have had more around 20 bass. yes, they're sluggish, and slow, but still, if the fish is there, and so is the food, they're going to eat. Especailly a minnow that's swimming very slow because it's freezing. Tried jigging with the stupid little pole and found it to be boring, and didn't get a bite that way, so I stopped pretty quickly. Never tried drop shotting, but like said above, it sounds about perfect, just don't move too much. Quote
