Bass_Akwards Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 Who taught you how to bass fish and what lake(s) did you learn on? Personally I taught myself how to fish when I was 10. My Dad wasn't into it as much as teaching me hoops, baseball, basketball etc etc. I'd fish this small lake in Illinois that you couldn't even bring boats on. It was down the street from where I grew up and it was called lake Elenor. I'd walk the 4 blocks with my bucket of nightcrawlers and ugly stick just hoping so hard to catch a bass. I used nightcrawlers exclusively and had no idea what the heck I was doing but I loved it. I stopped fishing when i was 15. I rekindled my love for the sport 3 years ago when I was 38 and learned how to be a GOOD bass fisherman quite quickly. That was thanks to all you guys here at bass resource. So happy holidays and thanks to all y'all here at BR. Without you, I wouldn't know a Senko from a Jerkbait or ever had a shot at the bigger bass I consistantly catch. (Sorry for rambling) Quote

Mottfia Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 My dad is without a doubt my best teacher. He has taught me nearly everything from the basics of lures to perfecting a pattern. I've also been taught about a different style of fishing jig from an old man that tournament fishes against us throughout the year. On cool thing has been that my best friend helped me become a better worm fisherman while another introduced me to jerkbaits some 10 years ago. I have a lot of people to thank for my level of fishing being where it is now. and yep BR has a place in that too. Mottfia Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted December 19, 2009 Super User Posted December 19, 2009 My dad tought me how to trout fish. My best friend introduced me to bass fishing. Bass Resource taught me how to catch bass. Quote
scaledriver Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 My dad started taking me with him bass fishing when I was in my early teens. We would go to a lake called Willow Slough, catch 12 inch bass all day on plain old brown Mr. Twisters never anything bigger it was so much fun. He started me fishing tournaments also back then. Now after takin many years away from the sport I am back fishing at Willow Slough. I remember them days everytime I leave the boat dock. Quote
brushhoggin Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 my pops taught me some basics like tying on and rigging a plastic worm, fishing it slow or reeling in a crankbait and such. that was pretty much all i needed to fall in love. it snoballed from there.articles and everyone here has helped speed the learning process up 90 to nothing. i'm forever grateful, first and foremost to my dad, and to everyone here as well. its like having another family here! :'( Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted December 19, 2009 Super User Posted December 19, 2009 Some guys in my town started a bass club. I found out about it and asked if I could join. They let me in and I learned a lot from the different people with whom I was paired. Quote
A-Rob Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 my Grandad got me going on smallies. I developed/expanded my game from there. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 19, 2009 Super User Posted December 19, 2009 Around 1958 in South Florida, my Dad sat me down on the bank and handed me a cane pole and some bread dough and said "catch a brim." So I caught a brim and he stuck a big hook in it's back and suspended it under a float and said "now I'm gonna show you how to catch a bass ..." Artificial baits came later... ;D Quote
Shane Procell Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 Grandma and grandpa had a big bass camp on Toledo bend. Some of my earliest memories were watching all those guys bringing in coolers full of bass. My pops was out of the picture since I was 2, but mom and I would go brim fishing on Lk. Darbone and Lk. Bistanoe(sp) in La. She encouraged me to develop my angling skills. I picked up bass fishing on my own. I have refined it from experience and fishing with others over the years. Bassing became a full blown addiction by 20. Mom encouraged me to get my captains license and make a go at charter fishing. God bless my mom! Quote

Super User Hammer 4 Posted December 20, 2009 Super User Posted December 20, 2009 Learned on my own basiclly, had a friend that got me into it. Kowen117 Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 MY grandpa when i was 3 or 4 on the braden river using live bait and then was i was older i got into artificial baits Quote
VABassin'14 Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 My dad taught me how to trout fish. Trout fished for years before I knew what a bass was. We would occasionally bass fish in a small pond below our hunting camp in Highland County. Years later, my cousin taught me how to bass fish and showed me many great places to to go and catch them. Now, my dad and I have gotten more into bass fishing than trout fishing. But my dad is the one who got me into fishing to begin with and taught me all the basics. Quote
Brian4618 Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 Mostly taught myself what I know, got a lot of knowledge from BR. My dad and grandfather were more saltwater fisherman and didnt know much freshwater except trout fishing. Learned/Learning on the Pamunkey River in VA Quote
NewAngler Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 This site. I wish i could kid. I started fishing in May. I maybe have been fishing 75 times, 72 of them have been by myself. When I first joined, I would ask about EVERYTHING. Then I would take what i learned to the water. If it didn't work, I would ask what I was doing wrong. If it weren't for this site I doubt I would love fishing as much as I do. Thanks Thai, Dan and the NOVA guys for teaching me local spots. Thanks RW, for some great smallie advice Thanks SharkBite, Muddy, Ghoti, and Steezy for helping me out in a real tight pinch.- I am forever grateful for you guys, and you know why. Happy holidays, guys. Thanks for giving me the little knowledge I have. oh, and thanks Catt for getting my blood boiling about football. Quote
tnbassfisher Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 My Dad used to take me to a small lake/pond that a buddy of his owned and would give me a pack of worms and let me go at it. So, I guess he introduced me to fishing. But mainly, my brother (who is 13 years older than me) has always fished a ton, and would take me all the time when I was little. He taught me pretty much how to catch fish for the most part. All of my personal bests have been caught with him helping me. Quote
EastTexasBassin Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 Jimmy Houston and Hank Parker taught me what I needed to get started. Many years later, I learned the rest of what I needed to know from BR and a good fishing buddy. Quote
bassindude Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 My dad taught me to bass fish mostly on Geist where i caught my first bass on a Rex Spoon fishing he weed beds by the twin islands. Also had yearly trips to Reelfoot that were incredible. My Granddad taught me to pan fish mostly on Morse, Mississinewa, and Monroe. Spent summers on his farm Fishing and bottle hunting, and whatever else we could get into. Those were the best years of my life. What would we all give to have access to all of the fishing knowlege from those teachers that have passed on. For me it would be a lot. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted December 20, 2009 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted December 20, 2009 I grew up on a lake brim and spec fishing but never for bass. I fished my 1st bassmaster club tourney with a friend of mine in high school and did not catch a fish. I spent the next 20 years making fun of the "morons who have no life" that watch fishing on tv. : Four years ago I met my wife who loves to fish. Then I bought a boat. Then I entered my first tourney. Then I found this site. (It's mostly your fault) ;D Now I'm the moron who watches, reads, thinks, eats, and sleeps bass fishing. Quote
Super User CWB Posted December 20, 2009 Super User Posted December 20, 2009 First - Myself through trial and error and alot of experimentation. (my dad got me started but he was more of a panfish guy at the time) Second - through the recommendations of shows like Bassmaster, In-Fisherman and Angling Edge etc. Shows that actually take the time to explain how the fish were caught on specific baits at specific times of year and not just showing the angler catching 2 fish out of a private pond. Last but not least- advice from the many knowledgeable anglers on this site. A wealth of information is at your fingertips. Literally. Quote
