I read years ago about a similar technique from the bank with a long rod and a top water. Reach out in front of laydowns and other cover, and work in a similar fashion.

Way back in the 1960's, I knew an old guy who would do the same thing, but he was using a 10' cane pole with no reel.

For the life of me, I can't remember what he called it.  He would have about 18" of line off the end of the cane pole, and would fish a variety of baits.  Topwater to Jigs, he would work the edge of the lily pads and small holes in the middle of the pad field.

This old guy had a wooden row boat that was just about the same age he was.  From watching the wrestling match he'd go through when he hooked one, I'm amazed that the guy in that kayak doesn't drown when he hooks into a big one!

Yep that's what it is we did that alot in NC where I grew up We caught Manny  bass that way

I really don't feel like it is "fishing", and also I feel you may lose your pole if you aren't paying attention. Big bass ****** it right out from you. But if it works it works.  I feel like also it would be more affective to have more line out

Years ago a old fishermen told he took a bike inner tube growing up and cut it into a lizard shape and placed it on the hook. Using it on a long cane pole and a short line he would jig it around the weeds to catch trophy fish in Florida. From my understanding it was before they made plastic worms and the method was called jigger fishing. I have just never thought to apply it to other lures. I felt it was creative.

Knew a guy that did that out of necessity.  He was paralized from the waist down I think.  Used to fish out of his station wagon with a teloscoping 12' pole straight out the window.  He caught alot of fish.  Just happened there was a part of the lake backwaters that had a road right around the bank.  Perfect for him.

looks interesting, but for me half the fun is having that fish fight and pull line, and jump way out there.

I just don't see that as being a consistent technique. It could be fun to catch a few like that but I honestly think I have a better shot at hooking and landing a fish that hits a buzzbait from a boat or the bank than with no line out right when it's right next to me.
