Do not act like you have never fished with one. I see these people all the time while fishing. This is the guy who will use the most off the wall, odd, funny, dumb tequnique to try to catch fish and watching him fish makes you want to laugh out load. Some of these peoples odd tactics worked and some of them did not.

Here are some of the ones I have seen...

Upside down spinning real guy = Fishes a spinning real upside down and winds the real backwards. I have seen a lot of these people.

I once saw a middle age woman fishing for "whatever she could catch" with a spinnerbait. The odd thing was she just casted out the spinner bait and let it sit on the bottom of the lake and put her rod in a rod holder as if she was catfishing.

I once saw some kids who had obviously NEVER fished before in their lives. They found a big bundle of fishing line. They began to search around the lake and found a hook. Later they found some old bread. They were then able to use their big bundle of line, hook, and bread to catch a good amount of bluegills. These guys have obviously never fished since they did not own any gear but they got the right idea pretty quick.

Duct Tape Guy = This guy used to own a house right along the edge of a local lake. His backyard faced the lake. This guy would cast out a line at night with some meat on the hook to fish for catfish and then set the rod in his backyard. He would then tape down his line in a crack along the footpath surrounding the lake so no one would trip over his line at night. I actually remember he caught some big 10 LB+ catfish doing this.

Bobber Guy = This guy was fishing a big terminator spinner bait with a bobber. He was working the spinner bait right realing it in at different speeds but he had a big bobber tied on 2 feet above the bait.

Wal Mart Pole Guy = This guy was useing one of those huge 8 foot heavy action white rods from wal mart to catch bluegills.

I also once saw an old lady fishing for catfish. She was useing saltwater gear and probably 50 pound test. I remember one day she caught a nice 7-8 LB catfish and just HORSED the big catfish in even when it was trying to take drag. She kept the fish for her dinner though so I am guessing she was fishing for something to cook and not for sport...

I see these people about once a trip.  I don't understand the reasoning behind it.

the reason is because everytime you see them you just laugh and drive on. What you should do is assist them...........

wait what the heck no wait these people are way to funny :D

You just made me laugh out loud. I remember 1 time I saw the backward spin reel guy and asked him if he knew that he was not using the setup correctly. His answer to my question was "everybody fishes this way". I had a baitcaster with me so I just said oh, and walked away laughing. As for the others, I've seen some of them as well. Great post.

My bro-n-law is the upside down spinning reel guy, lol!! I also witnessed a guy using a fiberglass crankin' rod that performed like a wet noodle to pitch a 1oz jig/pig in THICK pads!

A guy i fish with holds the spinning reel wrong as well.

I keep telling him....he won't listen. He only fish maybe 2 times a year if that. Some of the stuff he does just makes me want to go .He won't listen so i just leave it alone now.

Here's another one i see every time I'm out.People using panfish rigs(small hooks and ul rods) but use a bobber that 4X too big. It just bobs up and down but never goes under the water, resulting them losing their bait every time.

I saw a couple older gals at the lake once with one of those Walmart SW rod n reels.  The one tied into a huge fish (turned out to be about a 25 + lb grass carp).  She's fighting the thing in when her girlfriend decides to help by wading into the shallows to net the fish

WITH A TROUT NET!   ;D

It was like trying to knock down a California Condor with a fly swatter.   :D

I enjoy watching the "i hooked a fish with my perfectly good rod and reel but i'm gonna get it to the bank by walking backwards" guy.  Even funnier when they run.

when I worked at gander mountain i had a guy come in complaining that we spooled his reel wrong. we respooled it for him and he came back an hour later red faced and swearing. we asked him to show us how he was casting, so he grabbed his rod made like he was going to cast then he grabs the reel handle and gets it spinning backwards. he had no idea how to work the bail and the switch was on for the handle to go both directions. needless to say it made a big mess. i untangled it for him showed him the bail and a bunch of stuff about his reel. he kept saying he felt like an idiot for being so mad but oh well.

I had another guy come in and buy an ugly stick combo like you would use for catfish but he insisted I spool it with 10# fire line that reel would easily hold 1000 yards and at 10 cents a yard I told him that he didn't need that much but he would not take advice from a then 22 year old kid. his logic was that with that many yards of line he wouldn't have to respool every time he breaks off. :o

I guess the customer is always right.

Not judging, just an observation but......

2 liter bottle of Coke guy always makes me chuckle.

Yes.  It's true.  I see guy and his kid once in a while fishing a section of lake which never has so much as a tadpole in it.   They both have an empty 2 liter bottle of Coke with some line rapped around it. They throw the line by hand as far as they can, which is usually about 8 feet.  I've never asked them what theyre using for bait because I fear I might laugh out loud.

haha I saw the upside down spinning guy at the beach this weekend. I walked by and just looked puzzled, he looked at me like "What?" then I chuckled and walked off. Also say a guy using a baitcaster backlash it about 100x before he got his bait in the water. I offered to help but he would have none of it.

I recently saw an upside down spinning reel being used on a fishing show on tv.  Nat Geo I think.  ::)

I agree People are funny but also some of them do wierd stuff because 1. Ignorance, 2. economics.

My first rod/reel combo I put together was a nice spinning reel on a baitcaster rod. yeah that was real comfortable to use. But I used it for a while because if I went out and grabbed a new one, I would get shot by my wife, and 2 I have never forgotten who that felt so i will not make that mistake again.

And baitcasters, do NOT go there. I do not own one, probably never will. It would just play out like a greek tragedy if I did. First time i went deep sea fishing, well I had never used one, ever. Everyone else had. So when we stopped, and he said drop the line, I did and as soon as i stopped it, I had a rats nest the size of Texas. Made the first mate REAL happy, but he taught me how ot use it and I was good.

Though if you offer assistance and have it thrown on your face, heck, I would sit back and chuckle at the fella myself.

it seems like the  upside down reel people are multiplying  im seeing more and more of them every year.I'm afraid some day i might question myself and my normal   spinning rod outfit holding technique ,after all who wants to look like an odd ball out there. I'm just waiting for the day when some young guy comes up to me and says excuse me  mister,  you're holding your reel the wrong way.

A guy my dad works with asked me to take his boy out on the water this summer because he was really starting to get into fishing.  When I met him at the dock, he had a 8ft. casting surf rod, giant SW "spinning reel" with a beetle spin attatched.  I gave him a spinning outfit to use before I could even see him try to cast that d**n thing

When I was in Iraq, there were some little lagoons (nasty) with a buncha carp in them around Saddam's Tikrit "Palaces" and the Iraqis would fish balled up flour dough, on a hook, with line wrapped around their hand. When they hooked a fish , they'd jump in the water and wrestle it to the shore, where they stored it in a big cardboard box.

We are talkin some bigass 20-30 lb carp too.  :o
