Super User bilgerat Posted September 6, 2009 Super User Posted September 6, 2009 One of mine this season was to learn a jig. I have caught some fish on it, so I'm out of the chute. I have a lot to learn yet, but I'm on my way. My next thing is crankbaits. Until this year I was pretty much shorebound and cranks were not a good choice. Now that my boat is in the water that should open up the crankbait game for me. Did you break any new ground this year ? Quote
Super User cart7t Posted September 6, 2009 Super User Posted September 6, 2009 I've started fishing the shaky head. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted September 6, 2009 Super User Posted September 6, 2009 Fishing senko/stickbait/worm type lures and actually catch something. I've been trying for awhile now(since 3 years) and this year i actually succeed in catching bass with them...Including my PB 4# smallmouth. I'm quite proud of myself..... ;D Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted September 6, 2009 Super User Posted September 6, 2009 New techniques which I have learned and am comfortable, though maybe not proficient with include, the jig and pig, the shaky head jig using a ShakE2 megastrike jig head, tubes, finesse fishing using a Jackall Wacky Jig Head, and drop shotting. Next on the list, crankbaits. I hope to wipe out that goose egg on my catch scorecard within the next week or two. Three of my favorites from last year, spinnerbaits, chatterfrogs, and Mepps spinners have gone largely unused, and are feeling neglected. Quote
90x Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 learned how to fish the jig. wanted to learn the shaky head but never got around to it. Quote
SammyLee Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I wanted to learn to baitcast. Done. I wanted to catch a large bass (for me, anything over 5 pounds is large). Done. I wanted to learn to finesse worms. Done. Now, just all the rest of the infinite art of bass fishing awaits. There are literally thousands of things I must master. In no particular order a few include: Crankbait fishing Flip and pitch (casting accuracy in general) Jerk baits Soft plastics, other than worms. Bass boat management Sight fishing And, just to step it up a level, an 8 plus pound bass. Quote
NewAngler Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 For me, fishing is new. Like 5 months new and every little thing needs improvement. I wanted to first start out being able to locate fish. I feel I can do that better now. My fall goal is going to be working on setting the hook better. I can work on technique specific things in the spring. Quote
aarogb Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 This is my first year that I think I am pretty good at fishing. I have learned so much new stuff it's crazy. Some examples would include: 1. Drop-shot 2. Carolina rig 3. Jig (not fully satisfied yet but getting there) 4. Shakey head (just like the jig, not fully satisfied but I am definitly better than I was before) Quote
RippinLips86 Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 Im fishing only plastic worms for a year and a half when i go bass fishing. So far ive produced quite well. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted September 8, 2009 Super User Posted September 8, 2009 Going into this season, I wanted to work on jig fishing (I had never caught one on a jig), and using the Carolina rig. I can say now that those two methods are two of my top producers of nice quality bass. Now... on to that state record! Quote
Mottfia Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I told myself earlier this year that i would develop at least some type of technique for fishign deep water. And I've kind of sort of have gotten some good feedback. I can still catch fish on my blade and as always cranks have been great. I think the one big plus is that I can mentally picture ridges and breaks better now. Now I just have to develop some Catt like qualities and slow down even more. One step at a time tho Mottfia Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 8, 2009 Super User Posted September 8, 2009 The only fishing goal I have since the moment lil Raul actually bacame a fisherman last Dec is to take the kid fishing the most I can. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted September 8, 2009 Super User Posted September 8, 2009 I've pretty much gone full circle, and now my goal is to limit my lure arsenal to the "Necessary-Nine", "Top-Ten" or perhaps the "Dandy-Dozen" ;D Roger Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 One of my goals was to start using the Baitcasters I have more often and to learn to use them better. Did that and actually caught some fish with 2 of the setups I use. I wanted to get the hang of using a frog and so far I've had hits but haven't managed to set the hook and put a fish on the board. I guess one of my other goals is to lighten my tackle box a bit and carry only what I think I will actually hit the water. Quote
chubaka Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 actually catching a bass with a jig, learn the shaky head, drop shotting, and most importantly learn how to use a baitcaster. Quote
JLBomber Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I've pretty much gone full circle, and now my goal is to limit my lure arsenal to the "Necessary-Nine", "Top-Ten" or perhaps the "Dandy-Dozen" ;D Roger Funny stuff there. Goals; Perfect the baitcaster and explain the importance of catch n' release to both willing and unwilling ears Quote
Fat-G Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 10+......no Get into crappie fishing......yes Catch a nice smallie........yes Senkos.........Oh yes Jigs.......OH YES Quote
Big Phish Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 My goals for this year: Master the baitcaster - DONE Master the Jig - Haven't begun Ditch the Kayak for a boat - Was so close, but not done. Land A 3+lb smallie - Not Done, My biggest has been 2.5 Quote
Super User Muddy Posted September 9, 2009 Super User Posted September 9, 2009 Went back to basics and smaller. When I first got to this site, and LBH found out about an outside project i was into he and Zel tried to help me to get it to grow. It is a tackle giveaway to ex cons and fellas in recovery. There was an interview on another national site and some pushing by Russ and it did grow and it became in effective. The idea was to spend time with each fella and help learn to fish and find some legit recreation. We have since toned it down and now it is back to 6 fellas a year, and it feels so right again I have it down to 4 Baitcasters, I am no pro at using them but each trip it gets better. Got the jig thing happening full time this year, that was a 2 year venture. Next season: reading and learning to use this Garmin 160 Depthfinder. Right now it is a great night light ;D I also learned something at Fork Lake in Texas: I do not like big ,fast boats, large bodies of water and the size of the fish I catch, is not important to me at all. Give me a small lake, a small tin boat, small gas engine and trolling motor and I am happier than a fly on a pile of elephant poop! I do not care how big the fish are, I am used to and get enjoyment fro 14 to 17 inch fish, if I ever catch a lunker, fine great, but for me it is time spent on the water , fishing with a close friend, finding some fish and catching them. Hardly the stuff of a pro or great fisherman but the stuff that keeps me fishing from ice out to freeze up! Quote
wagn Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I didn't really have any goals around fishing a certian type of bait. It was more about gaining confidence in when to use which type of bait based on conditions and seasons. I've learned to stick what I know will work based on what the conditions dictate and in doing so have had my best year of fishing yet. My only real goal for next year is to to broaden this knowledge and especially when fishing deeper water Quote
Needemp Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 My favorite goal was to begin finding active bass in deep water. I have learned a lot. I also learned the shaky-head and I love it. Swimbaits haven't exactly produced for me like I wanted, but I haven't had great opportunities to fish them. Quote
Bryce C Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 my goal this year was to learn how to skip baits under cover, I'm pretty good at it with my spinning gear but still working on it with the baitcast setups. Other than skipping I tried to work on overall accuracy and landing my baits lightly. Setting goals and learning new things is one of my favorite things about bass fishing, and when you catch fish on something new that you've learned it makes it even better! Quote
avid Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 My only goal besides having a fun and safe outing is to catch a double digit. I know your out there hoggie!!! Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted September 10, 2009 Super User Posted September 10, 2009 Only goal is to enjoy myself each outing and not let an unproductive day have any negative affect on me. My passion is to catch the largest fish with the lightest tackle. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 10, 2009 Super User Posted September 10, 2009 It's still the same: 12 lb 1 oz smallmouth I had a shot at it, but dropped the ball. Now I'm just looking for another chance at that fish or her twin sister! I know where she lives and will be spending a lot of time in her neighborhood this season. 8-) Quote
