steezy Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Had an strange thing happen this morning. I was fishing a spinner bait along a grass line in about 1' of water and just before I lifted the lure from the water I had a bass strike at the lure and so aggressive that it splashed water on me. I got a nice view of the fish, looked like almost 3 lbs. It happen twice in 2 different areas. I know bass are predators but this is wild! I wonder what would make the bass so aggressive? Quote
Stagerlee Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 You probably hit him square in the face. Those spinners are heavy and that would make em' angry. 8-) Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 4, 2009 Super User Posted August 4, 2009 I have had a large pickerel at the shoreline dropoff rip my spinnerbait off my line just as i took it out of the water it was about 30" long. I have lost lures in another spot at dawn many times. The strike is so hard it rips the lures off everytime. I figure its a large smallie. I went from 8lb test to 12lb test with a steel leader so soon i will see whats doing it and it has a supply of my lures hidden somewhere too. Its happened to my buddies in the same spot too. In another place the fish has broken a few rods so far. I lost a topwater lure with 14lb test so far. It makes a sweep at your lure and its gone down into the weeds forever. Its a really big largemouth. Quote
D4u2s0t Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 bass are a very aggressive fish. have you ever seen a topwater bite? what happened is not unusual at all. one time I caught a bass, was releasing it, and I swear it turned around, looked me dead in the face, and jumped out of the water at me haha. Super User Grey Wolf Posted August 4, 2009 Super User Posted August 4, 2009 I have caught a lot of bass as I was taking my bait out of the water. Needless to say they are feeding very aggressively when this happens. Quote
Clark Stewart Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 maybe i'm giving too much credit to a bass but I've often witnessed the same scenario. For me it almost always happens when I'm fishing something steady with no variation in direction like a buzzbait or spinnerbait. I've noticed that several times when it's nearly at the bank that it gets smashed. My theory is that they're so in tune with their environment that their lateral line picks up not only the bait but also where the bank is. I wonder if they get more aggressive because they're trying to catch the bait before it reaches land and safety? I've personally witnessed a bass tailing my brush hog on the surface from about 3 feet behind it. I thought it was just a bunch of grass caught on my hog until it changed direction about 5 feet from the bank. I've also noticed that this has never happened to me in a boat - i wonder if that's because they don't know where the boat is as opposed to the bank which doesn't move. Call me crazy but that's a theory. Quote

Maybe the lock nest monster lives in that spot. I would try throwing rope out next time. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted August 4, 2009 Super User Posted August 4, 2009 Guess you don't fish frogs or topwater much. Agree. LOL I had it happen fishing ribbits more than anything else and it still scares the dogsh-- out of me every time. It happens a lot with cranks too. From what I understand it seems that the fish will sometimes make a last ditch effort to pin the prey item against the boat. Bass like it when they can get prey cornered or trapped in shallow water. Quote

I almost fell in the pond at lunch today, little dink smashed my Ribbit about four feet in front of me. My bait had been through that spot at least 20 times already, so I wasn't expecting it. My favorite though is the explosion four feet behind the bait, startling and frustrating, LOL. That's when I switch to hollow frogs. Quote
Tanker4lyfe Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 What are you complaining about all the bass around here are all suffering from heat exhaustion Quote

Here's a northern I hooked when it attacked a ten inch Power Worm, dangling a few inches over the water: Quote

I have them in my lake along with musky, and while targeting bass without leaders they will easily rip right through the line. I've had them rip plastics in half clean, and didn't even feel the bite. I've also had them take the hook and all, and again just felt a tiny nibble, and then the line is incredibly light. reel in, gone. Quote
steezy Posted August 4, 2009 Author Posted August 4, 2009 Thats gotta be a sad feeling when you reel in the line and nothings attached to the end. Quote

I fish frogs and top water a lot but this was like a homeless man going after a xmas ham. hahahahahahahaha I almost fell out of the boat once, I was tossing a frog in pockets in some slop and was reeling in, started to lift the frog out of the water about a ft from the boat with a big ol' musky jumped up, drilled it fell back down and broke me off. Lynx Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 They definitely have attitudes. This has happened my friend & I several times through the years, minus the getting wet. Good Lucks to You in Catching the "BIG KAHUNA!" Quote
