Yes, but fly fishing for bass only with topwater is a waste of the full potential you can achieve with a fly rod, fly rods are not only for topwater fishing. A friend of mine ( Luis ) is obsesed with fly fishing for bass and he uses all sorts of flies ( he even ties his own ) to attack different depths and does it very succesfully.

Thanks, raul. That shows how much I know about fly fishing. I had no idea you could even target bass with one, thought it was mainly used for trout. I thought I had a ground breaking idea!! Lol!

most of my life ive flyfished and only this year i started fishing for bass, havnt fly fished for them but i bet it would be a blast to try to bring in a big bass on a fly rod.. one of these days ill get out there and do it.

Just started fly fishing this year,and it has been mostly for bass,I have been using muddlers, a bass fly,cought and realeased a nice 6 pounder.

It's definately my favorite way to catch bass!  An absolute blast.  Since I'm not that good at getting on them in rivers I generally fish the lakes with regular gear.

Check around your town.  I just found out about a fly club here in Lawrence that has over 100 members.  You might be surprised, something similar could be in your town.

I use a flyrod for bass a few times a year just to refresh my skills for trout trips.  Its quite fun.  I river fish for smallies mostly but have hit my grandpa's farm pond as well.  You can use a flyrod for about any application.  I know a guy that flyrods for carp and cat's.  Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

Anything you can catch on a rod and reel you can catch on a fly rod.  I use a 8 wt rod with 8 wt line and 10 lbs leaders.  I tie my own flies and fish like there is no tomorrow.  I have sinking line to fish deep and floating line to fish shallow.  Simple change out of reels and keep on fishing.  Great fun esp. when you tie you own flies, deer hair for top water and anything that will sink for streamers.  You can get hooked' on the fly rod for bass.

It's imperative to use the proper weight flyline with your rod.  Should be printed on the rod near the grip.  I suggest a bass bug taper line in whatever weight the rod calls for.  Anticipate spending around $50 for a flyline, pick up some tapered leaders, a few flies/bugs and have at it.  It's a real primal  thrill to hook and land a bass on a flyrod.  The reel is not nearly as important as a good line so if you have to skimp, skimp on the reel (if you don't already have one).  Have fun and let us know how it goes.

I have a friend who pretty much fly fishes exclusively for everything and he is very good. He has a spinning rod in the car but I have yet to see him use it. I always enjoy watching someone who really knows how to use a flyrod, it is like poetry in motion.

One of my biggest fishing related laments is that I can't use my fly rod since moving to Florida.  I suppose I could, but the wind down here on the coast is pretty gusty most of the time.  I sorta gave up on it.

Fly fishing is effortless, and talk about finesse fishing.  Using a fly sorta defines that technique.

You just gotta get out and practice in it.  So many guys fly fish the Florida coast.  Stop the rod quick and make tight loops, you will be casting in the wind in no time.  Much easier to practice on the lawn, that way you are focused on casting not catching.

Fly fishing for bass is great, once you get stuck on catching them tying your own just adds another element.

I've got tons of friends that fly fish here in Colorado.  None of them were doing great trying for bass...........  That is until I showed them the light.

Wanna crush 'em on your fly rod?  Go get some Gammy #3 EWG hooks and buy a bag on 4'' Watermelon seed Senkos.  They're light and easy to cast on a fly rod.  Spank the banks at your local pond and hold on.
