airborne_angler Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 I have been fishing lately and occasionally come across a crankbait floating in the water or stuck in a tree thats very reachable. For the longest time I couldnt figure out how anyone could fish, and break off a brightly colored crankbait and just leave it there.I mean crankbaits arent exactly cheap, and to throw one and break it off and leave it,well someone must have some $$$ to be able to do this. Ive seen it in 2 different lakes this year. Last night it all came to me on why this has been occuring. It was getting dark, and the fish were exploding all over the surface, unlike I have ever seen. The air was thick, real thick with the buzzing of insects. I was throwing a popper and tearing the fish up,mostly dinks and Green Sunfish. I made a cast and didnt hear my bait hit the water, and realized it was somewhere in a tree. I broke off as I didnt want to search for it in the darkness (was a cheap Matzuo Popper from the clearance bin anyway) So now Ive come full circle with this curiousity!! Quote
Super User CWB Posted July 10, 2009 Super User Posted July 10, 2009 Could be they lost it when the water level was lower also. That happens by me alot and I usually go "treasure hunting" in likely spots when the water rises and the fish aren't biting. Quote
chief71 Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 I've been know to clean out the trees a time or two, thier/your los is mt gain....lol Quote

Found a Bandit 100 series in a tree in the spring and it's been tearing up the bass. Airbourne, if you're finding crankbaits up in trees it probably isn't because it was dark out. Might have been a bank fisher or wader or as CWB said the level was lower so they couldn't reach it. Quote
AndyPlaysDrums Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 We were shore fishing at a local state park yesterday and commenting on how the the trees on the bank looked like a fisherman's Christmas tree. Quote
tnbassfisher Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Found a few small Rooster Tails and small grubs in a tree yesterday. Quote
NewAngler Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 thats happened to me a bunch. i'm shore bound, so i loose some, and have to come out the next day with a pair of "grabbers". its also helped me stock up on lure i havent purchased... Quote

tnbassfisher Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 This forum reminds me that I was going to go look at a tree the other day for some lures that I have seen people get hung up, but I forgot. Will have to do that within the next couple of days. Quote
mike304 Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 When I was 14 years old(LOOOOONG time ago) I bought my first lure purchased with my own money, a jointed, frog colored jitterbug. That lure had 9 lives. No lie, that lure was lost and found 3 times. My Uncle lost it the first night I had it when he cast and it flew off the line. An hour later we heard something tapping against the side of the boat and there it was. Then a buddy broke it off on a fish at night and we found it floating in the pond the next day. Then the same buddy broke it off on another fish, and another buddy, while I was with him, found it stuck in the ice next to a stump with the hooks mostly rusted off. I always thought that was really cool. Quote
shootermcbob Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 I am a bank fisherman. I have one area that I can access that has rip-rap (covered with tons of small treesbushes as well) along my right hand side. I have lost many lures in those trees trying to cast as close to the trees/rip-rap as possible with hopes of enticing a lunker to come out and strike. There is no way to get to them because the bank is steep and the trees/bushes are impossible to fight thru...i know because I have tried. Every so often I have a lure in the trees and I will watch every weekend. Most don't usually make it from one weekend to the next. Quote
TommyBass Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 I wonder that with bobber fisherman all the time. I'll see a bobber that is completely accesible from both land and water and wonder "Why were they so lazy as to not go get it?". Similarly, I found a very nice Xrap floating in some weeds the other day... nice little present. Quote
Bassfisher10 Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 I once lost a lure in a submerged tree a week later I was fishing the same spot when I pulled my line out the lure I lost was hanging on the hook of the lure I was using Quote
AndrewCB Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 I found a rapala DT20 floating in west point lake this last weekend. The fun thing was, the treble hooks were taken off of it. Dont know if it was a prefisher for the tourney out there or what, but it was just floating. A little bit of lake water and a paper towel, 2 new treble hooks later, and I got a 12 dollar lure... that makes me think... if there were no treble hooks on it, how did it get hung? and since it was floating, how could they not get it back? oh well, the lake givith and the lake taketh away... LOL Quote
