BayouBassAssassin Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Caught this on a Lucky Craft sexy shad crank today. What type of fish is this? Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Looks like a Crappie to me..................... Quote
BayouBassAssassin Posted July 11, 2009 Author Posted July 11, 2009 I thought that this was too yellow to be a crappie. I've never caught a crappie that wasn't white. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Yeah i thought that too but it's the only thing it really resembles! Unless you have discovered some new hybrid species or something. ;D Quote
BayouBassAssassin Posted July 11, 2009 Author Posted July 11, 2009 Now that I look at it I guess you're right. That's crazy I've been fishing with crappie bait a lot in this pond and haven't gotten anything Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted July 11, 2009 Super User Posted July 11, 2009 Yes it is a crappie, a white crappie. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted July 11, 2009 Super User Posted July 11, 2009 white crappie. the markings vaguely make out bars. on a black crappie they would just be random, and a lot darker. its not unusual for crappies to take on a yellow color, specially black crappies. Quote
chief71 Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 I never knew of crappie to have the shape of a mouth... Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 13, 2009 Super User Posted July 13, 2009 It is a Tulane experiment gone bad. Tulane students will do this to mess up the wonderful Louisiana environment that LSU and other normal people love and enjoy. If it is a crappie, the markings are not that of a white or black crappie. May I suggest sending the photo to the Louisiana game commission and ask them for their input, as they are LSU fans and good people. It seems to resemble some hybird, like an outcast. Like a Tulane person. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 13, 2009 Super User Posted July 13, 2009 "White Crappie" White crappie generally display indistinct vertical bars, while black crappies are usually blotched in black. White crappie are said to prefer dingier water than black crappies, but since the white crappie in the picture displays lots of color, I'd guess it came from fairly clear water. When I was a kid, crappies were commonly called "Calico Bass", so we'll let you slide Roger Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 13, 2009 Super User Posted July 13, 2009 I compared the photo with the one I have of a crappie and it loks like a Coonass Crappie. Only found in Louisiana waters. So yes, I agree it is a white crappie of the Coonass variety. Quote
endless Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 we caught something likethat here here in va and we was told its a rock bass.from what this site shows it looks more like a white crappie though. http://www.mdc.mo.gov/fish/fishid/sunfishid.htm Quote
