carrothead Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 How excited can you get after catching EVERY FISH? OH GOD! WHOOO! YEAH!!!! IT's A GIANT! YES, BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why does he do this? It's gotta be an act, right?
bigtimfish Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Some people are just more passionate about things than others. I do that same stuff everytime I sink a good 10 foot or longer putt. Or when I chip one in from off the green. I get pumped when I catch fish, not like Ike, but I get pumped. Most of my excitement goes on the golf course when i do something good. Because i totally suck at golf.
6pointbuck2003 Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I dont think its an act. I get emotional when fishing. A tourny last monday i had 2 big keepers on and they snapped my line i through my rod in the bottom of the boat because i was that upset and punched the pro seat. Any time i hook and land a big one i get all excited high 5'ing every one in the boat. I feel once you loose that excitement of catching fish (even small ones) or the sence of a chalenge its time to quit.
JohnMac Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 its not an act. the guy just truely loves what he does and that is catching fish
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 9, 2009 Super User Posted July 9, 2009 ** THINK BEFORE YOU POST ** We have been down this road a few times before. The policy here at BassResource.com regarding ALL professional fishermen is this: NO BASHING, PERIOD. If you don't like Mike, that's fine to say so, but leave it there. -Kent a.k.a. roadwarrior Global Moderator
Super User Dan: Posted July 9, 2009 Super User Posted July 9, 2009 How excited can you get after catching EVERY FISH? OH GOD! WHOOO! YEAH!!!! IT's A GIANT! YES, BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why does he do this? It's gotta be an act, right? I think it's an act also but he's a good fisherman and probably good for the sport. I've seen him act completely normal after catching a fish and then he kind of glanced up and you could tell he noticed the cameraman and remember he was there and then started going ballistic. A lot of his outbursts just seem forced to me. Also, you're telling me he went from this: To this: ...naturally? I think he was manufactured by the industry but I still think it's good for the sport.
steezy Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Im just like Ike, however, I talk to the fish when Im crankin him in, begging him to stay on the hook. Then when I land the fish I shout and talk big trash (but I always thank the fish gods). If its a big one I usually get so excited I have to sit and relax for about 5 min before I can continue fishing. If my wife is with me she gets scared that Im going to have a heart attack. I hope that excitment NEVER goes away! (It feels too good)
Super User Raul Posted July 9, 2009 Super User Posted July 9, 2009 Cheering every fish he catches is his way, if that makes him happy good for him. Nobody is a gold coin all the time. You see me fish and you might wonder : " does this guy ever get excited about anything ? " :-? You can think I 'm made of stone, sure, every fish I catch excites me but I don 't express it.
jimmieO Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 We almost need an Iaconelli section right next to the senko section... I think he's awesome. His over the top attitude is just part of who he is. Its refreshing.
D4u2s0t Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 If you don't get excited about catching a fish, then there's no reason to be fishing, or on a bass enthusiast forum for that matter. I'm happy to catch anything, and enjoy every fish that bites. I may not go home and brag about all of them, but I still find it to be fun.
SoFl-native Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 It isnt an act. I just wish he wouldnt say every fish is 'huge' or 'its a giant' when its like 2 pounds. He does that all the time.
Captain Obvious Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I'm sorry are we not suppose to scream and yell every time we catch a fish, guess I learn something new every day LOL Mike is great. Capt.O
Big-Dan Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 it is not an act lol its just the way he is. read his book "Fishing on the Edge" and you'll know why! great read!
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted July 9, 2009 BassResource.com Administrator Posted July 9, 2009 I've gone fishing with him 3 times now, and can honestly say it's not an act. It's all about the victory of figuring out the puzzle, and not so much the size of the fish. Figuring out the puzzle - that's the challenge for him. So when he catches a fish, he's unlocked the puzzle, and it's a "win" in his mind. I remember one time he "thought" the fish were holding in deep water on rocky points. First point we pulled up to...nothing. 2nd point, caught one. Third point, caught another. He knew at the point he had it figured out. He got so excited, he threw his rod down, ran to me at the back of the boat, and hugged me while screaming! Thank God no cameras were present! LOL! An act? Hardly!

Super User Dan: Posted July 9, 2009 Super User Posted July 9, 2009 I'm still not convinced. The camera thing and the unbelievable screams are just too much to overcome.
Little Luey Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I like Mike, I think he is a good fisherman too. Most of the time I have seen him on a tournoment he does get excited but I think he is feeling like he is about to get paid, it must be different fishing for $500,000 than it is for $25,000 for him, so if you ask me if I will get excited to see a bigger check, i will scream and dance if that is necesary. Now thw one who really only catches hogs and monster is Shawn Bigsby (sp.?), he is also a good fisherman but just watch his show one day.

Koop Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Mike is my favorite pro tour angler... if you think its an act... read his book.
Super User Dan: Posted July 9, 2009 Super User Posted July 9, 2009 Mike is my favorite pro tour angler... if you think its an act... read his book. How in the world does that prove anything though? Couldn't he just be writing from the perspective of his "character" just like he acts it?
Koop Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I suppose it could be just one big lie... but it truely does not seem that way in his book. Honestly even if it is just a big act I don't really care, he is entertaining... what he is paid to do.
RobbyZ5001 Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Dan this whole subject has been beat to death in the past on this forum. Read old posts to find people thinking the same as you if you need that. I don't know what your looking to get out of this discussion? Looking for arguments?
lineslinger Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I LIKE MIKE! You can tell he's passionate about his fishing. Oh that we all could love our jobs as much as he does. Let us not judge our fellow brothers of the fishing fraternity. Perhaps we just resent the fact we're not quite as good, nor do we get paid the big bucks, or we're just jealous. No matter what is said about him, it can't be denied he's awfully good at what he does. JMHO

No, I'm just tired of being told I'm 100% wrong. I don't care if he is genuine or not. He is a fantastic fisherman and he has brought tons of attention to the professional level of our hobby. I'm just saying it seems more than possible to me that his persona was created to garner just that sort of attention. I honestly don't care I'm just telling it like I think it is.
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted July 9, 2009 BassResource.com Administrator Posted July 9, 2009 Dan - If you don't like him, that's fine. That's your choice. But to make assumptions about his character without knowing him is unfair. You wouldn't want somebody to do that to you. I've known him for 10 years. I have no reason to lie to you.
