basslikesworms Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Hi eveyone, I am a new bass fisher in MA!! Now I got a question want to ask you guys. I usually fish bass using plastic worms. As the summer coming, the pond in which I fish grows a lot of weeds, both bottom and surface. I just want to know which rig is best for the weedy pond? T-Rig? C-Rig? Jig Head? OR drop shot? Thanks, Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 All of the rigs you listed can be productive and weedless in the grass. As long as you hide the point of the hook into the plastic(T-Rig). Quote
basslikesworms Posted July 8, 2009 Author Posted July 8, 2009 It sounds good! I will try this weekend. Thanks, All of the rigs you listed can be productive and weedless in the grass. As long as you hide the point of the hook into the plastic(T-Rig). Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted July 8, 2009 Super User Posted July 8, 2009 If the top of the water is choked with weeds, you might want to try a top water hollow frog, such as the Spro Bronzeye. If you can penectrate it OK, then go with your texas rig and adjust the weight according the penetration needed to get it to the bottom. Or you can use a jig. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted July 9, 2009 Super User Posted July 9, 2009 Hey Crestliner; Have you ever tried the Slider Weedless jig head? I have been using this , with a small *** Brush Bug, on ponds I can punch through the weeds, only dinks so far, I am going to switch up to the larger bug, next time out Quote
mike304 Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 if you have thick, floating weeds, nothing better than a frog. just make sure your heart is healthy enough. Quote
Red Bear Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 no matter what you use youre going to pick up some of the weeds and algae in a pond like that. i fish one frequently. your best bet is gonna be a weightless t-rigged worm or a top water frog. i just found out about the frog being a good choice tuesday evening on that pond, its not something ive used much. the pond im refering to can get pretty tough/annoying with all the algae floating around on top, the best fishing is when the algae is spread out over the pond everywhere because that means the fish are spread out too. you just have to pick and choose your holes where to cast. when all the algae is on one side of the pond all the fish are under the algae keeping cool and it would limit me to casting along the edge of the algae and hoping to draw the fish out. but that all changed when i finally tried my frog there. i just throw it right on top of the algae and let it sit a couple minutes. then slowly start moving the frog in a little at a time stopping to let it sit and repeat. and try to direct it through any 'holes' in the algae and let it drop into the water at those spots. the fish will come up and get it even if they have to go through the algae. the biggest problem i have with this is the fish missing the d**n frog altogether, or they will come up to get it like a second after youve moved it at the spot you just moved it from...just be patient and remember to let the fish take the frog under before you set the hook, or be prepared to dodge a flying lure coming back at you lol Quote
vatech Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Hahahaa, I fish similiar ponds in my area and the last two posts sold throwing a frog for me. I usually t-rig (tex-pose) a senko or various rage tail plastics with a colored tungsten weight for my lakes but it's nice to have alternatives. Anybody recommend any particular brand/type of frog? I currently have some rage tail toads and think I would rig them with a 4/0 or 5/0 hook. Quote
Dennis1022 Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I use to live in Southern NJ, and I couldn't wait till the weeds and Lilly pads started. What I used on the lakes that had all that junk is Purple or Blue Worm 10-12" and make it weedless. Also Frogs, I have several different styles of frogs, like a Super Frog, Mepps frogs and some can't remember all of them. One more for lures, I used a Minnow use a weedless hook. I cast the worm or frog on the pads or slim and let it sit for couple seconds or just under a minute. Then start twitching the lure. Watch for wave or a splash, the bass will hit the lure to make it fall in the water. Like Red Bear stated watch out for the lure coming back to bite you. Good Luck De Quote
7mm-08 Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Here's another vote for frogs. The expensive frogs like the Spro are great but I have caught even more fish on the popping scum frog which is only $3. I am so addicted to frogs, it's really about the only bait I use anymore. Quote

I currently have some rage tail toads and think I would rig them with a 4/0 or 5/0 hook. the thing about fishing on top of algae/grass is you may not get the desired/intended action from the tail of the lure until it drops into water, im not sure, but im thinking a bright color and patience may be the key in this case. mine is called a tournament frog, its weedless and a double hook is built in, chartreuse color. and unless its really far out on the pond i can lift my rod tip and make it hop across the algae like an actual frog. im not gonna recommend brands and colors though, because like i said above i dont have much experience fishing frogs, mine is cheap and im sure there are better ones. im just noting what worked for me the other day and i personally was thrilled to finally figure out a way to get to the fish under the algae and grass without picking up 10 lbs of it reeling back in. and if you start seeing ripples around your lure under the water, hold tight and watch out, youre probably about to get hit. oh and make sure you leave a little slack when youre letting the frog sit there, so the fish can run with it when it takes the frog under and it gives you another second or two to prepare to set the hook. fishizzle Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 wacky rigged senko on the edges and pockets or spinnerbait along weedlines Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 9, 2009 Super User Posted July 9, 2009 I just caught a 6.01 LMB from a 90% weed choked pond while on my lunch break. Spro frog, lathered with Megastrike, thrown on my flipping stick loaded with 65# braid. Yahoo! Try some frogs Quote
