So I have a tournament at a lake this weekend that is notorious for mosquitos.  I know we will be sitting there for a good 20 minutes before launch getting ate up, but I dont really like spraying bug spray on when I am getting ready to fish.  What do you guys do? Do you just suck it up and get bit, do you have a certain brand of bug spray that you use or what?

Why do you not like applying bug spray when you are ready to fish?

I'm the same way with sunscreen.  But if you take some pro-cure or megastrike, or any fish attractant after your done applying it and rub it in your hands, that way you won't be spreading the smell of the bug repellant all over your fishing equipment.... Other than bug spray, maybe get a beekeepers suit  :-/

Bug sprays are good fish repellents. The ThermaCELL mosquito repellent looks good, does it work?

We are blessed with few bugs, except when night fishing.

WRB, I did the insect repellant test last year after a similar thread to see if it was true that repellants with DEET will deter bass from taking a soft plastic lure. It did not and I caught several after spraying it directly on the lure. I did the same with sunscreen and it had no negative affect either. Those substances may deter laboratory kept bass but not wild bass in their natural habitat.

I have a Thermacell and it works fine if there is no wind (which is rare). You need to have still air for the vapor to remain around you, otherwise the down wind side of you (in a gentle breeze) will be insect free and the upwind side will get attacked. They work well for camping in a tent where you are shielded from wind.

edited: another note-if you are fishing in a boat and moving, you cannot keep the vapor cloud around you as it takes a while for it to form and expand. Bank fishermen may benefit from it's use though.

Douse yourself in clear JJ's magic.

Guaranteed no bug, or human for that matter, will come within 100 yards of you.

When I fished in Canada, Lake of The Woods, we always sprayed out clothing before going out and loaded up on vitamin B12 30 days before going up there. My wife used Avon Skins So Soft lotion and that also worked to keep everything except deer flies off.

One just because you caught a couple on a bug spray doused lure doesn't mean it has no negative effect. It just means fish will still bite if there is some on there. If the fish were wary, or inactive it could have enough negative effect to cause fish to not bite.

DawsonH, it was not a couple of bass that first time, it was dozens of bass in several locations during about 8 hours of fishing. I have duplicated that experience several times with different persons fishing with me as a result of the same conversation. I was using OFF spray repellant.

The sunscreen experiment (Coppertone SFP-50)was even more dramatic as using it out-produced several "attractants" including Megastrike.

I heard that eating bacon and eggs before fishing will cause the fish to not bite, so I spray them with bug spray to hide the odor.

Few things are worse than having bugspray all on your hands than putting a dip in.

I always spray myself with off, apply a lot of sunscreen and catch PLENTY of fish! I sometimes wash my hands with Lindy's no scent soap. Works like a charm!

Always put in dip before spraying

Eat a Key Lime everyday and in a month you wont have to use bug spray or you can buy concentrated juice online  sounds crazy but it works, old indian trick

I believe what your thinking about is the Sawyer Permethrin Insect Repellent. Supposed to work great for ticks and OK for mosquitos.

I have yet to find any bug spray or similar product that will keep the deer flies away.  If you're in an area with lots of them, a bugshirt is the only way to go.

Good tip George.  This is especially important when the stripers are running at stickmarsh.

No seeums are a big problem for me, I've tried every short of using buzz off clothing.  You may be able to find this clothing cheaper.

I've have not seen a product that you can treat your own cloths.

Living in South Louisiana for my entire life (57 yrs.) has exposed me to more than my share of mosquitoes, especially this time of year. For the past few years I have been using the Chase Products Insect Repellent and will readily tell you it is the best bug spray I have ever used.

They have two products, Chase-MM (15% DEET) and Chase-MM Woods Guard (25% DEET) either of which works very well. You can order the products online for a very reasonable price -- Chase-MM @ $3/can, Woods Guard @ $4/can.

Follow the link below to access the Home page. There is a "Search" text box located at the top of their Home page - key in Chase-MM or Woods Guard to place an order. You won't be disappointed.
