coontreer Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 So I have a tournament at a lake this weekend that is notorious for mosquitos. I know we will be sitting there for a good 20 minutes before launch getting ate up, but I dont really like spraying bug spray on when I am getting ready to fish. What do you guys do? Do you just suck it up and get bit, do you have a certain brand of bug spray that you use or what? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted June 17, 2009 Super User Posted June 17, 2009 Why do you not like applying bug spray when you are ready to fish? 1 Quote
Branuss04 Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Why do you not like applying bug spray when you are ready to fish? I'm the same way with sunscreen. But if you take some pro-cure or megastrike, or any fish attractant after your done applying it and rub it in your hands, that way you won't be spreading the smell of the bug repellant all over your fishing equipment.... Other than bug spray, maybe get a beekeepers suit :-/ 1 Quote
Steven Ladner Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Get yourself a Thermacell unit x2, I always use them for hunting also Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 17, 2009 Super User Posted June 17, 2009 Bug sprays are good fish repellents. The ThermaCELL mosquito repellent looks good, does it work? We are blessed with few bugs, except when night fishing. WRB Quote
coontreer Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 Wow, thats the first time I have seen the Thermacell, pretty cool! Do they actually work, and if so, how much area do they cover? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted June 17, 2009 Super User Posted June 17, 2009 WRB, I did the insect repellant test last year after a similar thread to see if it was true that repellants with DEET will deter bass from taking a soft plastic lure. It did not and I caught several after spraying it directly on the lure. I did the same with sunscreen and it had no negative affect either. Those substances may deter laboratory kept bass but not wild bass in their natural habitat. I have a Thermacell and it works fine if there is no wind (which is rare). You need to have still air for the vapor to remain around you, otherwise the down wind side of you (in a gentle breeze) will be insect free and the upwind side will get attacked. They work well for camping in a tent where you are shielded from wind. edited: another note-if you are fishing in a boat and moving, you cannot keep the vapor cloud around you as it takes a while for it to form and expand. Bank fishermen may benefit from it's use though. 1 Quote
Super User CWB Posted June 17, 2009 Super User Posted June 17, 2009 Douse yourself in clear JJ's magic. Guaranteed no bug, or human for that matter, will come within 100 yards of you. 4 Quote
Shad_Master Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 I've been thinking about this for a while now - somebody should come up with a garlic scented bug spray - any entrepreneurs out there? Quote

When I fished in Canada, Lake of The Woods, we always sprayed out clothing before going out and loaded up on vitamin B12 30 days before going up there. My wife used Avon Skins So Soft lotion and that also worked to keep everything except deer flies off. WRB 1 Quote
DawsonH Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 One just because you caught a couple on a bug spray doused lure doesn't mean it has no negative effect. It just means fish will still bite if there is some on there. If the fish were wary, or inactive it could have enough negative effect to cause fish to not bite. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted June 17, 2009 Super User Posted June 17, 2009 DawsonH, it was not a couple of bass that first time, it was dozens of bass in several locations during about 8 hours of fishing. I have duplicated that experience several times with different persons fishing with me as a result of the same conversation. I was using OFF spray repellant. The sunscreen experiment (Coppertone SFP-50)was even more dramatic as using it out-produced several "attractants" including Megastrike. Quote
George Welcome Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 I heard that eating bacon and eggs before fishing will cause the fish to not bite, so I spray them with bug spray to hide the odor. 2 1 Quote

I believe what your thinking about is the Sawyer Permethrin Insect Repellent. Supposed to work great for ticks and OK for mosquitos. Quote

If you're in an area with lots of them, a bugshirt is the only way to go. Quote

river-rat Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Living in South Louisiana for my entire life (57 yrs.) has exposed me to more than my share of mosquitoes, especially this time of year. For the past few years I have been using the Chase Products Insect Repellent and will readily tell you it is the best bug spray I have ever used. They have two products, Chase-MM (15% DEET) and Chase-MM Woods Guard (25% DEET) either of which works very well. You can order the products online for a very reasonable price -- Chase-MM @ $3/can, Woods Guard @ $4/can. Follow the link below to access the Home page. There is a "Search" text box located at the top of their Home page - key in Chase-MM or Woods Guard to place an order. You won't be disappointed. http://www.chaseproducts.com/ Quote
