Bob8899 Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 In process of putting blades on spinnerbaits and usually go with a #5 colorado blade on a 1/2 oz spinner bait. Wondering what you preference is? I'm considering the possibility of two colorado blades. However will loose some of the "thump" and possibility lift? Ice out ten days ago in my area. Primary forage is bluegill. Water clarity 1-3 feet. My three primary baits in these conditions are a jig, spinnerbait or crankbait. Quote

Super User Paul Roberts Posted March 19, 2009 Super User Posted March 19, 2009 In general, I like a single for subsurface -willow faster and flashier and Colorado slower and creates a stronger wake. I like tandem blades for bulging the surface -again same blade styles as above. Another really good early spring lure option is a hard jerkbait: X-Rap, Rogue, Husky, etc... Quote
Bob8899 Posted March 19, 2009 Author Posted March 19, 2009 Agree on the suspending jerkbaits. Just seldom use them as the lakes I fish have a lot of submerged and standing wood in the key early spring areas. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 19, 2009 Super User Posted March 19, 2009 Bob, I use a Chatterbait to get a slower horizonal presentation than possible with a spinnerbait for cold water. Quote
Bob8899 Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 Bob, I use a Chatterbait to get a slower horizonal presentation than possible with a spinnerbait for cold water. That is a good suggestion. Never though of using a Chatterbait in a cold water situation. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted March 20, 2009 Super User Posted March 20, 2009 Ditto the Chatterbait. It came on like a gimmick, but is a really good coldwater bait. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted March 20, 2009 Super User Posted March 20, 2009 I always use a double willowleaf style spinnerbait. I fish clear, weedy water, and the willowleaf works best for me. Falcon Quote
Super User senile1 Posted March 20, 2009 Super User Posted March 20, 2009 I fish mostly stained to highly stained water, and I fish spinnerbaits with at least one Colorado blade most of the time. I believe that Colorado thump leads fish to find the bait in the water clarity that I fish. Last weekend I fished a spinnerbait with a single gold Colorado in water with a visibility of 6 - 8 inches. When visibility is 1 to 2 feet I usually opt for a small Colorado followed by a willowleaf blade. I also will occasionally use two Colorado blades, or a Colorado followed by an Indiana blade depending on what is working. In clearer conditions I'll break out the double willowleafs. Generally, when the water is cold (40s and lower) I'm using a large Colorado blade and doing a slow roll, yo-yo, or fishing it mid-depths. Quote
NYfishwow Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Senile1 i get what you said about the spinnerbait.. Those work in cover and good idea to use a colorado blade in those conditions. Quote
