Mattlures Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 I am sure this has already been posted but in honor of mrlitetackle's post of his buddy getting stuck I figured it would be a good idea to post this(even if it is a repost) Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted June 9, 2009 Super User Posted June 9, 2009 It works just that easily. Had occasion to use that technique many years ago. I was fortunate enough to have read about it just a few days before a guy fishing with me buried a hook in the base of his thumb just like that. We didn't have a bottle of booze on hand. ;D The illustration below is a bit different from how I read and did it. The tug on the line was not parallel to the shank. The pulling hand would have been a bit lower than that in the illustration. Reduced the chance that the barb could get a purchase on flesh. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted June 9, 2009 Super User Posted June 9, 2009 Well, he chose a good bourbon to drown his sorrows. He's guzzling Maker's Mark. Quote
S I G M A Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 the bottle of makers mark is just plain awesome Quote
bigfish88 Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 the bottle of makers mark is just plain awesome thats the only way id let someone rip a hook out of me, haha! Quote
fivesixone Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 LOL Now I have a reason to always keep a bottle of liquor on the boat! ;D Thanks for that video though, good info! Quote

Quitlimpin Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Fishing in the back and my buddy rears back with a rattletrap and when he snaps forward one of the rear trebles buries to the bend right in the side of my neck. We popped it out no problem just like in the video. Been about 10 years or so but the thought of that treble in my neck still gives me the shivers. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted June 10, 2009 Super User Posted June 10, 2009 The whiskey would cause me for damage then the hook. Quote
mrlitetackle Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 ohhhh my gosh dominion...... that has to be the worst thing i have ever seen....... Quote
adclem Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Uhmm, not sure what to say, first that big hook in the guys thumb then the hook in the eye. Later, Quote
Super User Dan: Posted June 10, 2009 Super User Posted June 10, 2009 at least it was just a fly. Can you imagine getting a 5/0 EWG or a round bend jig hook with jig skirt, trailer and all stuck in your face? Quote
Tom Bass Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 WEAR GLASSES WHEN FISHING....! Thanks for the video Dominion Dan. Mattlures, Thanks for the video on hook removal. I have done that and a few other methods. The maneuver that is shown in the video is a last resort for me. Usually I try to fish it out with a pair of pliers mainpulating the hook to find an exit pretty much the same as it went in. Once when I did the "hook yank" method shown, sans Maker's Mark, I pulled a small white piece of what I though was tendon along with the hook. It must have been nerve. My index finger was not the same for quite a while but I am happy to say the feeling came back. The one thing that I have found with hook sets in your flesh is the area numbs itself. Either the nerves deaden or the mind blanks it out. Regardless of the removal method. Let the nerves do their job while you do yours but for Godsakes, don't power down a bunch of Whisky to deaden pain on a boat....or anywhere else for that matter. That really doesn't help the situation. Especially if you are the captain or the owner. Quote
avid Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 I heard about that technique for removing hooks. I actually knew people who did it or had it done for them. They both said it works really well, not much pain or blood if done right. Well it's one thing to hear about it and quite another to actually see it. Wow...That was awesome. Quote
airborne_angler Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 I used that method once with success. It was my very first time launching my Jon Boat out the back of my truck. I got a rattle trap stuck in my calf. I cut the line and figured since I was already an hour away from home,I would just suck it up and do what I came to do,and that was to fish. Spent the whole day on the lake with the hook in my leg and the bait rattling on every cast. ;D I got home looked up the removal method and the hook popped out no problem,no pain. Its a good idea to where Sunglasses and a hat while fishing, not only because of the sun,but for protection. I was stationed in Alaska and when the Salmon run in the rivers, people stand shoulder to shoulder slinging yarn flys all over. Occasionally youll see a hat go flying across the creek/river. Better a hat than someones scalp or eye. A hospital on the Kenai River has a 4X8 sheet of plywood with all sorts of Salmon lures stapled to it,These are all lures that were pulled from peoples various body parts at the hospital. Quote
rboat Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 If the hook is not in too deep you can push it through and cut off the barb and pull it out. It works, and only leaves two small holes and less tissue damage. Quote
kms399 Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 hhhmmmmm whiskey in the boat wonder if that had anything to do with the reason he got a hook in the hand? Quote
