It's a killer bait when trolled for stripers; it has accounted for many largemouth while trolling.   :)

I wonder how they decided on the name " Hellbender "? I grew up catching Hellbenders on the river where I lived, or at least it was within bicycle distance. I think these creatures are rare now and in our MD fishing handbook they are to be returned if you catch them.

I have a half dozen or so of them (big and small).   Can't say that I've used them that much....maybe I'll tie one on next time.

I have never used the hellbender lure but I do know that in alot of states mine included they are a protected species because they are threatned.

Got several ( when I don 't have something laying there in my T- boxes ?  :) ) big and small and it 's been ages since I fished with one, in Mexico they used to call them "perritos" ( analogy, hellbender = water dog = perros de agua = perrito ( little dog ) ) but it 's been a long time since I 've seen one in a store.

Does it catch fish ? yes it does like any other lure, in Cajón de Peñas they were extremely effective when trolled.
