arkbassguy Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 i was recently fishing in a boat in my small pond, all of a sudden this monster bass sticks his huge mouth out of the water with a fish tail hanging right out of his mouth(very cool lookin) and continues trying to swallow the fish down, after that several more nice bass jump out of the water exposing their whole bodies.......what causes this? I mean are they feeding on top water bugs or what? Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 19, 2009 Super User Posted May 19, 2009 First bass trying to swallow his dinner. Following bass following the first bass. They may have been feeding on minnows, bream, bluegills or baby Crappie. You could not see the bait fish but they were there. Isn't Mother Nature wonderful? You got treated to something very special that the vast majority of us never see. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted May 20, 2009 Super User Posted May 20, 2009 Big bass was struggling to swallow the other and it probably excited the rest of the school. Quote
Little Luey Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 they're teasing you that happens to me often. ;D Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted May 20, 2009 Super User Posted May 20, 2009 I've never in over 25 yrs seen a bass clear water, except when a 5.5 lb'r caught my spinnerbait before it hit the water.. Quote
Big Mike in Fl Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I had one jumpin the boat one day, musta been chasing minnows or something and came right in the boat, that was interesting. Quote
Use ONLY Stren Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Im not sure why they do it but the other day I was out on the water and a 4-5 lb. bass cleared the water by at least 16''. I know you guys are thinking im full of myself but I saw it. Quote
bobbyK Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Big Mike, If it weighed 23#, would it be a record????? Do not answer that. Bob K Quote
simplejoe Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 When I see a bass jumping out of the water like that, I start throwing topwater baits at them and good chances are you will get a couple of them. joe Quote
pondmaster32 Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 the bass are hitting flies, dead bugs, and other insects. if you have a flie rod throw some foating poppers or some dry flies. If not then throw a small popper to the area's where the fish are mainly jumping and retrieve it a one pop every 5-8 seconds. if still no fish cast some live worms to the jumping fish and you will catch what ever is juming. and sometimes those fish are carp so have some heavy line on your pole just in case you get a giant carp. GOOD LUCK!!!! Quote
