a fishes memory

every few years a new bait comes along and people catch a ton of fish on it. i remember a few years ago it was the x rap,then senkos,now swimbaits. but after a while the bite on those lures slows down a lot. at least thats what i feel happens. is it that a new bait came along and the hype overshadowed the older one or do bass have a good memory that says last time i ate one of those i had my lips ripped off? do they actually strike at that bait less because they see it so much? i do believe that its a combo of both. what do you think?

Bigtim ! I have been fortunate enough to catch and hunt about every game species on this continent and every other, and the one thing that is vertually the same with all of them is they all are very quick to learn when some type of hunting or fishing pressure is put on them. They are all quick to associate something out of the ordinary with danger. I personally just think after being blasted day in and day out with the same baits it doesnt take them long to realize something is just not right, thats were all of the tricks of the trade help you seal the deal. One last thing , if you noticed it's the baits that most look like there natural prey have always delivered the goods, lizards, worms, anything resembling a baitfish. JUST MY OPINION !!!

A Bass's Memory is 15 minutes. They do become susceptible to seeing a bait a thousand times but IMO it doesn't matter much.

I'm fishing some of the same lures on the same structure for 40+ years and still catching

You have no idea how many fish I 've caught, released just to be caught again with the same bait and same fishing technique three or four casts later in the same general location.

I think the amount of fisherman that are using the newest lure is what makes it produce so many more fish. The next "hot" lure comes along and the fisherman switch. Now, I will say this. I have seen fish in pressured lakes become alot more skittish in general making them more wary to everything.

We discussed this in detail with the guru himself, fisheries biologist, Bob Lusk. Bob is the creator of Pond Boss magazine and is the premier private lake/pond builder in the country. We got to sit up picking his very generous brain, pow wow style, till the wee hours of the morning and this is just one of the many awesome little tid bits we learned. It was like Bass school.

        Alright I did miss the school so enlighten me , how did POND BOSS BOB discover a bass only has 15 minutes of memory ? How would a bass associate prey from non-prey species after long periods between feedings.

hehe, thanks LBH. I can't re-iterate enough how much I learned on road-trip. I will be attending every year!

There is so much knowledge that is presented and I am still basking in the knowledge, the people I met was a bonus LOL. It was a little spendy for me as I had to fly across the country but anyone who has the chance, it's definitely money well spent!
