does any state record the number of fish caught and weight

just curious if the d.e.c of ny or any state for that matter records how many fish of say 5+ lbs are caught. obviously someone would have to notify them about there catch. i caught my pb of 7lbs and change last year and released it. i notified them and they sent me a congratulations card thanking for the release and a pin thats awesome as well.  i would think it would be interesting to know of the size of fish across the state that are caught in the year.  ;D

I know Jersey has a similar program, one section for adults and one for kids. I think you also get a pin and maybe a certificate.

I've never seen where they had a breakdown of how many fish were caught and the weights. It would depend on everyone accurately reporting their catch. It would never happen. Not that fishermen are s er's or anything :, just too much room for error.

Washington State has collected info from tournament results for years and formulates a census based on that collection...they experimented with a catch record book for the general angler but it has not taken off yet.

Ohio has it, for every fish. It goes by length mostly i believe. You have to have it recorded at a certified place and send the picture in. You then get a pin. Get every pin and get another pin for getting every pin.. lol

I don't think Wisconsin has anything like that. We have to much fishing to keep track.

Texas certainly does. They compile creel counts from major tournaments as well as club tournaments and release them in September each year for the previous year.

Maryland has a citation program based on length.

I participate in the Catch and Release portion of the program. The citations they send out for the C&R look better than the ones they use for the bass checked in to the different check stations around the state.

every so often, a state biologist, who works for the FWC (Florida fish anf wildlife commission) will be at the ramp, taking surveys of what we caught, numbers, size, species, what we caught them on etc etc etc. I don't tihnk florida has any kind of recognition program so to speak though.

Most states do random population sampling (shocking) but don't record actual catches by individual anglers. Some states record tournament totals.  If the fish is over 11?13? lbs in Texas, it goes to the Share a lunker program but other than that.....
