fishfanatic Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Looking for a frog that I can cast into heavy lilly pad cover. Appreciate any tips thanks Quote
The Next KVD Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 My personal favorite is the Scum Frog! Throw it on a flipping stick, a good quality reel spooled with 50lb Power Pro Braid. After you make a cast, lower the rod tip and continusly twitch the rod tip while slowly taking up slack line. This causes the frog to twitch slowly along the surface. When you get a bite, wait until you feel the weight of the fish. Otherwise you'll pull the frog away from the fish. Frog fishing is ADDICTING!! If you find the Scum Frog to light to cast, try the Spro Bronzeye. it weighs a 1/2oz vs Scum Frog's 1/4oz. Alot of people like the Bronzeye, but I can't get a fish to look at it. I'll stick with my Scum Frog. Hope this helps. Quote
jack1 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 I love the Spro Bronzeye frog in heavy pads. Be sure to have a stout rod/reel/ and braided line. Quote
memo43 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 If you want the movement for the spots in between the pads get the Rage Tail Toad, constant movement similar to a buzzbait without the hangups/snags. For a walking style frog try either sum or spro. Just make sure you have a strong enough line barid 20 plus memo Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 I think its safe to say that the SPRO Bronzeye is the best frog for the money. The Bronzeye Jrs are softer, thus you have an improved hook set ratio. I just got one of those new fangled high-falootin Bronzeye Popper frog, seen here: http://www.***.com/descpageSPROBAITS-SPBPF.html It is a BEAST. Most frogs dont really stir up alot of water. This thing has a great popping action (just about as good as any other popper you can get) and is completely weedless. I'm very impressed! If you want to invest in a more expensive frog I'd recommend the Fish Arrow Cover Jack. Since frog baits just about never get snagged, you might as well get a really good one because it will last forever. http://www.***.com/descpageSWMFISHARRHDTLOBINA-FACJ.html The interchangeable blade makes a sweet wake when fishing lilies. However in the sloppy stuff it gets hung up. When you have the skirt on, it "walks the dog" quite well. This gives you two different weedless frog actions that the slop bass probably haven't seen much of. This bait cast foreverrrrrrrrr. Good hookups and very durable. Besides, they are on sale! =-) I think the one I got before cost me like 17 bucks..... Quote
Super User Shane J Posted March 13, 2009 Super User Posted March 13, 2009 Brother, you have to throw the Rage Tail Toad! That's all there is to it! Quote
smallie.huntin Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 I bought myself a spro last year and fished with it for about 3 weeks before it got snagged in some really thick off-shore junk. I only caught 3 fish on it. I had 65 lb braid as well. I lacked a true "frog rod" but my old old MH Ugly stick worked ok. My only gripe with the spro was after the second fish the frog stretched out around where the hooks enter the body and I was having to empty it of water every cast or 2. Is this typical? For $8 I would expect more then 2 fish before that happens. I bought myself 2 packs of rage tail toads to begin this year. Havent used them but am pretty excited to try. Quote
fishfanatic Posted March 13, 2009 Author Posted March 13, 2009 Looking for a frog that I can cast into heavy lilly pad cover. Appreciate any tips thanks Thanks to all for the great tips, I will be trying a few different frogs this year Quote
Super User CWB Posted March 13, 2009 Super User Posted March 13, 2009 Snagproof Bobby's Perfect. Softer than Bronzeye. I've found in the real thick pads with junk weed around them these cannot be beat. Alot of times the bass inhales a ton of slop along with the bait and you need a softer bait to get a hook into the fish instead of just pulling the whole mess out of his mouth. Next choice would be Scumfrog Trophy but it tends to get hung up a little more as it might be too soft. Then I'd go with Bronzeye or Boze Sumo if just thick pads. Quote
Tuckman Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 I like spro bronzeye myself, if anyone is having trouble hooking fish on the bronzeye, try the bronzeye jr. the fish really suck the little guy in. I always start with the big frog though because it can be cast to lilly pads in the next lake over. Quote
J. M. Richardson Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 I like the scum frog in green flake. Works well in most pads on the lakes here in Wisconsin Quote

bigmountaineer Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 SPRO makes a nice frog, but the gold ol' Scum Frog is best for me. Cheaper and works just as well, make your using a Fast Tip pole to be able to cast it right and work it right. Good luck, Quote

Super User Catt Posted March 13, 2009 Super User Posted March 13, 2009 Stanley's Ribbit or the River2Sea's Bully Wa which by the way doesn't leak water like the SPRO. Quote
rebeav Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 The ribbits and I am experimenting with Boze ZZ walker. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted March 14, 2009 Super User Posted March 14, 2009 I love the scumfrog popper and also the spro bronze eye. I plan to try the bronze eye popper this year as well. Does anyone here like the original Snag Proof frog with the realistic legs? Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Does anyone here like the original Snag Proof frog with the realistic legs? Haha I had one of those years ago. That thing had hook ups similar to a a treble hook......with all three prongs cut off. Quote
d.hark Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Has anyone used this yet? http://www.***.com/descpageHDTSNAG-SPFGZ.html I think the single hook would vastly improve hookups. I love the spro cast it a mile, never gets hungup, but man you miss alot of fish with it. I actually prefer plastic toads/frogs like the horny toad. I have better hookup with them it seems and think it has to do with the single hook. You can also let them sink when you come to and open area in the pads or weeds. But I saw this frogzilla with the single hook and it looks like a perfect combo of a bronzeye with the single hook like plastic toad. Any thoughts? Quote
tritz18 Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 I love the Spro Bronzeye frog in heavy pads. Be sure to have a stout rod/reel/ and braided line. x2 Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 I use the Scum Frogs and the Mann's frog as well. I usually add rattles and some extra weight for casting distance. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted March 14, 2009 Super User Posted March 14, 2009 I am a frog lure connoisseur have tried just about all the popular floating frogs. IMO the best all around frog is the Spro Bronzeye. If I am tossing in super thick stuff I like the Swamp Donkey since it floats a bit higher and has a smaller narrower profile. The newer popper by Spro is good for something a bit different. I am not a big fan of the Mann's frogs though. Quote
