my best fishing decision was just that...fishing.

about 3 years ago, I was well on my way to alcoholism. I was partying every night, getting wasted every night. yadda yadda, you get the point. I always fished, but it wasn't nearly that important to me. it was a once in a while thing, well, at some point in time, the two things (drinking and fishing) switched priorities. now I'm virtually obsessed with fishing, and I drink once in a while. now, when I'm upset, angry, depressed... I grab my pole and head to the water, it used to be the first thing I grabbed was a beer (or some southern comfort ;D)

so anyway, you catch my drift...fishing is probably the best decision I ever made, I just wished I had made it  before I wrecked my beautiful truck... but that's a whole other story.

Going to a local fishing club meeting. I did this just recently and also fished in one of their tournaments and had a blast. Just going to the meeting and fishing that one day tournament I learned a ton about fishing. Hopefully I'll be fishing with this club more and maybe start fishing different tournaments.

buying a good rod & reel for each of my kids, they are both hooked! I have 2 gurls 9 & 12, the fact that they had good equipment meant not having to deal with problems while learning. quality equip. is just easier to use! Thats what the bait monkey tells me, and that is what I tell my wife!

Listening to recommendations of folks like Glenn and others more experience guys and upgrading my equipment.  I still don't have top dollar stuff, but a couple of rigs push $200 with one going $200+ and that is a lot for me.  Really enjoy using better equipment.

I bought some senko a long time ago and never used em.  Last spring I was fishing a small pond kept getting hits on a TRigged Lizard but they were short striking and I couldn't get them hooked.  

Concluded I needed a slower fall, and t-rigged a weightless senko and started slamming them.  Last summer I know I caught between 150-200 bass on senko style baits.  

The increase in strikes couple with the higher quality equipment has lead to a lot of bass being caught in the past twelve months for me.  Now I anticipate bass fishing as much as bowhunting, and that is saying A LOT.

Hey, I know I already answered with, "Moving back to Cali" (which I still stand behind)....... and I see that several people have also responded with BIG philisophical answers as well.

But one more thing does come to mind......

Probably the next best thing I ever decided to do with my fishing, was to use nothing but braided line. I just never break fish off anymore. And when your fishing specifically for big ones, that's even more important.

Saves me lots of time, worry, and $$$ too. I remember how I use to always have to stretch my mono before every trip, to try to get the coils out... and test for weak spots, and then have to replace it every 1 to 3 trips.... Ha ! No more.

I change my braid about 1 or 2 times per reel, per year...... and that's just because I'm sponsored, and have 'miles' of braided line on my dresser, and in the closet.

Best decision I ever made was to leave the cheap ebay rods alone and invest in some better rods and reels. Me and my brothers do our own type of 3 man tournament for the fishing season mainly from the shore. The first year I caught a total of 8 fish with some guidance from them. Then over the off season I subscribed to a couple of fishing magazines and sites and read up on the equipment and techniques. Last year I caught a total of 54 fish with a PB of 4#.

All do to better equipment and more knowledge

My best decision was enjoying fishing with my buddies from high school.  We still talk and get together to fish every now and then.  It's like a small reunion.  I've learned so much from fishing with them, and I've gained lifelong friends. If we wouldn't have fished together, I'm sure we wouldn't be talking near as much as we do now.

It's a tight race between joining my fist bass club so I could fish tournaments and switching over to baitcasters ;D
