I have had it happen before. and i had it happen today. What do yall do when a fish picks up a worm and swims towards ya?

I feel if you set the hook hard you may rip the hook out of the mouth. do you wait for the fish to turn it may swollow it.

This is just some food for thought

I just reel down and set the hook.

Just reel down and set the hook with a vertical set.  If you don't try to set the hook, you'll never catch the fish.

Reel down to pick up slack and quickly snap your wrist without

moving the position of your hands relative to your body. It's all

about speed, not power.

I fish braid on my worm rod so I just reel down and just flick it up fast like RW said. With mono I'd probably drill him though.

I'm a 100% braided guy, so hooksets are never a problem.

Sure, sometimes if a fish is swimming straight at you, you might yank the hook out of its mouth.... but then again, sometimes it could be swimming straight away from you and you might still rip it out of it's mouth, leaving you wondering "how the heck did that happen" ??? But more often then not, your line will tick, and you won't have any idea what direction the fish is headed, so you just reel down and swing. Some you hook, some you don't. That's fishing.....

But again, braid helps tremendously with hooksets.... Unless you are a really hard "swing for the fence" kind of hooksetter, and you are not able to get over that, when you start using braid.

Peace,

Fish

Since joining the forum and learning the "Drop the tip, reel the slack, SET THE HOOK!" saying, I catch 95% of the fish that bite the worm. It's like magic.

I may be different than most, but the first sign of something different i tend to set the hook.  Granted I can normally tell when I hit a stick on the drop, weeds, etc.  But I would rather have a false hookset than miss a fish.  That and if you hook the fish well, a harder hookset is better than a weak one.  I jack a jaw when I get the chance, but I tend to fish for larger fish(in Iowa).
