38.97 Bass a Day?!

Watched Legends of Rod and Reel on the Outdoor Channel. They had a guest on, David Romeo, that made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for catching the most bass in a season. He claims he caught 3001 bass over a fishing season. I am not sure what a "fishing season" is since in Florida it fishing season all year long, but I think I remember hearing say over a 77 day period.  Therefore, he averaged 38.97 fish/day.  

Left me wondering if the guy is full of hot air or fishing some stocked ponds. What do you think?

That's pretty crazy. 3001 fish? I don't think that I've caught that many in my whole life. That is a bunch of fish.

Not so hard for me to believe. We have ponds down here that are seriously messed size wise but you can catch 100-200 bass in a day of fishing. They are all 10ins but the principle is there!

In the right (or for myself, wrong) kinds of lakes, you could very easily catch 100 bass a day. But what will you have proved by catching 100, overpopulated, underfed, sunken bellied dinks ?

Probably the best numbers fishing I've ever had (along with some decent size) was in 2001, at Clear Lk. CA. {I remember the aprox numbers pretty well, as I've repeated this story so many times   }

I caught very close to 1100 bass, in 90 all day trips {200 mile round trips BTW... yes, about 18k miles on the truck that year, just for the Clear Lk trips !} But here's the kicker, those 1100 fish weighed very close to 5000 lbs ! Yes, the majority of those fish were 3 1/2 to 6 lbs ! 28 of them were over 8 lbs..... but the biggest fish of the whole year was...... drumroll please..... 9.8 lbs ! Not one stinking double digit bass, out of every darn one of them !

So the next year, I started fishing the tough-as-nails trout-fed trophy bass ponds. My numbers went from 1100 fish, to probably 60 (with just as much time spent on the water). But out of those 60 fish, 27 were over 10 lbs, with the biggest being.... drumroll please.... 16.5 lbs ! Now that's what I'm talking about

It would not be hard to average 40-50 a day on Toledo Bend but your average would include bass in the 8-10 size. I've seen and participated on numerous occasions where 100+ were caught in a single day by a single angler.

I also read that less than 2% of Romeo's fish were over 12 inches

It could be easily done here on St. Clair. In the next few months, it is very common to have 100+ days, and not that many would be dinks.

yeh, if size is no issue, and a man had the time and on the right body of water(for me it would be the New River) he could shatter that. 77 days you say. Not to take anything from the guy, but i bet alot of people on here could do that , no sweat.

40 bass a day, my best last year was 14 in 2hrs, so yea if you fished it from sun up till sun down you could easily beat it. my pond that is.

What i heard as well. http://www.combat-bassfishing.com/ Wayne Carpenter of combat fishing and st.clair's secret hot-spots books has told me stories.He easily does 100 fish limit almost every time he goes out.

That makes sense! The best numbers day I ever had was about 50/60 bass, 30 caught in a 30 minute period. They were all stunted fish out of a shell pit. I guess if you fish a bunch of packed lakes it is a reasonable feat.

Well its the WEight i would look at - Dont know if they suplied that but the Weight to fish ratio would have to be relitivly low.

It depends, there are some places ( like Lake Zimapán in central Mexico  ) where if you don 't catch at least 30 fish in a day ( 1-3 lbrs ) you better dedicate yourself to something else ...... like playing golf.

No problem in South Florida if size is not important.  I have had many days over 30 dinks.  If you are a better fisherman than me (not hard to do) and fished the Stick Marsh or the the canals in the Everglades or any one of a hundred smaller lakes in central Florida you could easily boat over a hundred dinks mixed in with several over 5 lbs.

My buddy and I can do over 20 fish a day on a random lake in Michigan so I am guessing that on a hot lake and if you are really good it would not be impossible. Especially if size is not a factor.

If it's the guy I'm thinking of he did it in Pennsylvania.  Alot of it was small farm ponds.  I think his day job is a motivational speaker.

Man, you have to come down to South FL and show me how I can easily do that.  

I went out Monday with a buddy of mine and caught 40 bass combined from 1 to 5 lbs and we were pretty happy with the day of catching, but there is no way I can do that on a consistent basis not for 77 days straight.

I like to think of myself as a pretty good bass fisherman, but it ain't happening especially on the Stick Marsh, the place has trophy bass and when the bite is on, its ON, but its not a numbers factory. I know some local shell pits and residential golf ponds that can put up numbers. but I would run out of spots to fish after a week or two and the same hot spots' bass would receive a formal education. Even if I fished the Big O with Steve Daniels or Scott Martin every day for 77 days I don't think we could catch over 38 fish per person per day.  

So shot me a PM and I'll put you up for a week at my pool house. Once you get here you can show me how its not a problem in S. Florida to average 38-39 bass a day per person over 77 days.

then again i live in Ontario, where the bassin' isnt near fishing in the southern states.
