Use a spinnerbait trailer or not?

I used to throw the zoom split tail trailer and my dad asked me why don't you use a trailer any more.  I told him, i really don't know.  I just stopped using it.  it has been so long since i used trailers i can't remember if i caught more fish with em' or not.  Any advice?

I personally don't use a spinnerbait trailer.  A spinnerbait is more of a reaction type bait that goes through the water colum fast enough that a fish doesn't get a very good look at it.  Just my 2cents.

I use a trailer with the spinnerbait 90% of the time.

I also use a trailer hook with a spinnerbait.

I have never fished with a trailer hook on my spinner baits before but I bought a couple packs this winter.  When fishing a spinner bait with a trailer hook and trailer are you attaching the trailer to the trailer hook or the main hook?  (I hope that made sense.)

Also do you guys use trailers on buzz baits as well?

I really have found myself not using a soft plastic trailer on my spinnerbaits. I suppose if you have a larger bait presence, using a single tail grub, or one of those split tail "spinnerbait trailers" would be worth a shot. But majority of the time I will use a spinnerbait with a trailer hook attached, not a trailer bait.

I think this picture should clear things up for you http://a.espncdn.com/winnercomm/outdoors/bassmaster/i/P2_BT_Dec04_InPro_Fishing.jpg You attach the trailer hook with a peice of plastic tubing, this tubing should have came in your pack of trailer hooks. There is two ways of attaching the trailer hook with the tubing, one would be to cut a peice of tubing and put it over the eye of the trailer hook, then run the main hook of the spinnerbait thru the tubing that is wrapped around the eye of the trailer hook, this will keep the trailer hook still on the spinnerbait. Although, the way I prefer (any many others I notice), would be to stick the spinnerbaits main hook through the eye of the trailer hook, and then take the tubing and stick it through the point of the main spinnerbait hook, this will stop your trailer hook from flying off your spinnerbait while enabling it to free slide up and down your spinnerbait's hook shank.

As for the buzzbaits, yes I use a trailer hook with buzzbaits, but to me it really depends on the length of the buzzbait's main hook. If the length is pretty long I won't bother with a trailer hook. Like on the 1/4oz Booyah buzzbait the hook is pretty long, I don't use a trailer hook with it majority of the time.

For me, I only fish a plastic trailer on my spinnerbaits when I'm fishing stained to muddy water and want to add more bulk to the bait. I'm usually adding a big, bulky grub when I do.

As for the trailer hooks, I'm using one about 99% of the time on my spinnerbaits (always on buzzbaits). The cover I'm fishing has to be extremely thick for me not to use on. I perfer to have the trailer hook move freely, so I put the trailer hook on first and then put a small piece of the tubing on next.

Thanks for the help.  I missed a bunch of strikes on spinner and buzz baits last year and decided it was time to get some trailer hooks.  Nothing like watching your buzz bait get blasted by a bass right on the surface, gets the heart beating fast every time.

I use a BPS Cajun trailer about 50% of the time. I have also used curl tail grubs. The new skirts by Strike King and Z-Man have trailers built in. Seems to be personal preference or confidence thing.

I almost always use a trailer hook though.

Same here, but I sometimes start with a trailer.

The added weight is sometimes an advantage

for casting, but I have never noticed any difference

in production.

Excellent point! A color change (or even the retrieve style or weight of the spinnerbait for a different position in the water column) will tell you exactly what they will commit to so they crush the bait, not just come up for a half hearted attempt.

I guess I am the odd ball. I despise trailer hooks.I throw my baits through too much crap to use those things.

I like to use zoom flukes and super fluke jr. as my trailers but only use a trailer 50% of the time usually to bulk up the bait and slow the fall.

I myself have never bought or used trailer plastics but I would like to some this year and see how well they do.  I only use trailer hooks when the spinnerbait comes with them.
