Super User Micro Posted February 3, 2009 Super User Posted February 3, 2009 I've never run into a PETA type, but like a lot of fisherman I've run into the nimrod that builds a dock out into a public waterway then has a hissy fit when I fished around it. I had a fella scream at me a few years ago, at which time I told him to hang tight until a DGIF official got to his home to talk to him about hunter/fisher harassment. He shut up. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 3, 2009 Super User Posted February 3, 2009 Micro, As big as you are I would think you could stomp any of the jerks with one hand tied behind your back. There is one guy on the hot side of Lake Anna that will come out of his house and stand in his back yard and stare at us as we fish around his property. He will also take a stick and throw it into the waters so his two Labs can play swim and retrieve. We ignore him as there are way too many places to fish in the lake. I guess one day when he doesn't show up we will consider that he died. Quote
Olebiker Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Sorta like that Hank Jr. song, "A Country Boy Will Survive", the democrats and anti's just don't get it. We aren't supposed to be talking politics here, but since the moderators allowed your comment: I am a Democrat and I hunt, fish, watch NASCAR, drink beer, change my own oil, sing in the choir at church, love my wife and kids, vote, pay taxes, take my hat off and sing the national anthem, and drive a Ford truck. Oh, and I'm a Southern boy (old man, actually). Quote

Oh, and I'm a Southern boy (old man, actually). X2 except for the southern Don't have much on anti around here. I'd probably say 50% of people either Deer, elk, moose, mountain lion or bear hunt around my parts. The other half fish. I think everytime I go out fishing everyone asks how the day has been. Quote
CFFF 1.5 Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 It is always interesting to read post like this. Inevetiably it is always the same. People in the North East, The Left Coast, and Colorado (something about Colorado attracts the nutters), sometime Montana are the areas that have this sort of thing happen. It just doesn't happen in the south to often, there are several reasons for this. For a southern boy there are certain things ingrained into you growing up, the three G's God, Guts and Guns. Sorta like that Hank Jr. song, "A Country Boy Will Survive", the democrats and anti's just don't get it. To avoid sounding arrogant, or giving the anti's who lurk here ammo, I think I will leave it at that. Anyway Sportsmen are the single greatest conservationist there are, we have a stake in the future of game and fish. I won't bore anyone here with information that most of you would know any how, but the single most dangerous threat to our environment are environmentalists. Wow, I didn't know your political position had anything to do with whether you like to fish or hunt?????? Quote
IDbasser Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 The only people I have had problems with while fishing are the ones fishing in tournaments who think they have higher priority to the fishing spots, and think they own the water. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted February 3, 2009 Super User Posted February 3, 2009 Not directley. One of our better lakes was closed off to all fishing about 17 years ago because some misinformed do-gooders petitioned the owner. It seemed they thought fishermen were a threat to the safety of non-native geese that had made a year round home of the lake. Trying to explain to these people that feeding them disrupted their migratory patterns was useless. They're not Jersey geese, they are Canadian geese. The goose problems (attacking humans, feces everywhere, etc.) got so bad that just about every township in the state now has ordinances prohibiting feeding any wildlife. The geese have moved on. Good riddance. Quote

Oh, and I'm a Southern boy (old man, actually). I did not mean to offend anyone, I didn't even realize I had put that in my original post. I was talking about the west coast, north east, and various other small pockets that this type of activity takes place. Those areas are typically represented by a Democrat in Washington, however there is a huge difference between a Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, et al and the main stream Democrat. If you are from the south the party doesn't even call you Democrat, you are a Dixiecrat, because the ideology is so vastly different. I didn't mean to paint the entire democratic party as anti hunting, it just happens that the most vocal antis in politics are democrat, a different democrat than the dixiecrat, and from main stream dems. Again didn't mean to offend. I will edit the post. Now please lets return to the original theme of this thread before it gets locked. Quote
mrbassky Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I think PETA has fishing on down their list of priorities these days. I glanced at their website and they are much more worried about Kentucky fried chicken, Michael Vick, and veil. Fact is I think its a battle they know they cant win. Actually my wife has prevented more fishing than PETA and we have only been married 4 years. :'( Quote

On the other hand, candle parties, make-up parties, tupperware parties and girls-night out are my best friends Wife: "Honey we are having a party here tonight I need you to be gone for a couple hours" Me: "Oh I totally forgot. I was thinkin we might have stayed in and had a date night" Wife: "Well maybe we can do that later this week" Ok: "Ok, Well I'll let you have fun" What she doesn't know... The truck is already filled with the gear and rods from the morning of. lol Quote
done Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I remember going white water rafting in Tennesee. One of the warnings they gave us was to never allow our rafts anywhere close to fisherman. Said most of then were armed and they had a nasty habit of shooting holes in the rafts. We also have a kid in Wylie with his daddies ski boat that does the same thing. He started in on us came in at about 30 mph with a 25 ft ski boat (I am in a 14 ft john), maybe 15 ft off the side. He just about threw my grandfather out of the boat, he did actually hurt his leg and swamped my Jon. Luckily my bilge pump could take it. When he came back the second time he got a VERY large sinker against the side of Daddies boat. I don't generally condone that type of action but in his case, 2 or 3 more passes, my boat would have been swamped and my grandfather would have been hurt worse. I can take harassment, but when you take it too far and start endangering the people in my boat, I take is very personal. If I would have had a firearm on me, he would have gotten a couple warning shots. Anyway, after that day, we gave me a very wide berth when we came across each other. Quote
CGH Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Only happen to me a couple of times, And I always tell them as my grandfather told them. "I shoot better than I swim, or talk" Pick you your poison, or get to stepping. Quote
pondhopper Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Yeah. Years ago in Montana I was spinning a creek in a city park. Some moonbat ran up and started telling me that I shouldn't catch fish from creeks. He demanded to see my fishing license; I demanded he go f*** himself. He called me an ******* and left. Quote

simple_man Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Last Oct I was fishing the Delta in my Kayak in a cut between two main channels. A speed boat filled with kids came by on the main channel causing a big wake that pushed me into the tulies. I guess the kids enjoyed that and came back through the cut and almost swamped me. I decided I needed to defend my self the next time and stretched my anchor rope across the 30 ft. cut as a warning to slow down. Well they didn't slow down until the 40 ft of yellow poly stopped their prop. My ears were burning from the profanities as I paddled out to the other channel. After that I caught my personal best that day. Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I've had some "have some compassion!" peoeple leave remarks as I fished. A few months ago me and my friend where goose hunting on a public lake. We had shoot a goose that fell than swam towards shore. We where paddling around looking for it and had just found it when someone shined a spotlight on us. It was this ornery woman who thought she was the best thing since sliced bread. "What are you doing! She yelled. "Looking for a wounded goose." we replied. "You cant shoot geese!" she screamed. "Yes.... we can." "No you cant! Goose season is closed!" "Um, goose season doesnt end till the 15th of January." "Well, you should give up looking for it. Thats like trying to find a needle in a haystack!" she said with a very unpleasant tone. "Actually, we just found it." My friend had the goose in his grasp and it was flopping around. So we broke its neck and added it to the pile of dead geese in the bottom of the canoe. "Get off my property!" "Ma'm, we are in a canoe on public water harvesting geese through legal means. We never set toenail on your property." "I'm going to call the cops!!!" as she ran off. "Have a good night" : Quote
Scorcher214 Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Ive never run into any anti fishers but i did have an instance where some punks were fishing about 20 yds away from me, they caught a nice 2lber and when they went to go release it, they launched it up into the air and it came down on a boulder in the water, i think it died on impact. I scolded them "If your gonna act like and kill fish for *** and giggles that then why don't you just leave". Then they mumbled something and left. They came back with there daddy, he asked me if i was harassing his kids. I told him what happened then he gave his kids a talking lol. Quote
SWMIBASSER Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 without question the worst on-water behavior I witness consistently is other fisherman. I see guys cutting off other guys en route to a spot/section, fishing within a handfull of yards, full bore runs close to shore, etc...... Some of us need to remember that others have the right to the lake too. Quote
Bochafish Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 One of my best friends is a PETA activist, and we had a conversation about fishing. I let her know that I catch and release, and she insisted that it still harms the fish mentally. I said that a fishes brain is not complicated enough to be mentally damaged by being caught and released. She responded with, "you don't know that." I said, "You're right, I don't, but I figure if it was ok for Jesus to be a fisherman, it's ok for me too." Quote
