Branuss04 Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I'm just curious as to what is the most money (In baits) you guys have lost in a single trip? And also, about how much you guys loose during an average trip? Me and 4bizz just got back from a trip where the fishing gods hated us. What should have been a great trip (5 bites and 1 dumped 5-7#er within the first 30 minutes), ended with almost $300 worth of lost baits and one good fish. It was absolutely horrible, we were loosing baits left and right. We lost them anywhere from breaking them off on the cast, to breaking them off on a fish, to breaking the off on a hook set, to breaking them off on timber. At one point, 4bizz even jumped in the lake (56 degrees) and dove down 9 feet to rip a stump out the the ground that had taken his bait (2 hours later he ended up loosing the same bait ;D) It was one of those trips where we shoulda stopped at noon and said "Lets cut our losses and go home and drink beer". I think we lost around 5 swimbaits and at least a dozen jigs. >. It's time to go stockpile my swimbait collection again. :'( Quote
SkilletSizeBass. Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I use a lure retriever to attempt to retrieve my lures, most of the time it works. Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 28, 2009 Super User Posted February 28, 2009 Going one day to a lake I happened to fall on a frigging canyon deep hole in the middle of the road while driving my mom 's CRV, wheel ---> kaput, tire ----> caput, all the right rear suspension ----> kaput. If I hadn 't insurance the cost would have been around $4,000, I paid "only" $400. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 28, 2009 Super User Posted February 28, 2009 Breaking off on casts and with fish on sounds like bad line. Quote
Branuss04 Posted February 28, 2009 Author Posted February 28, 2009 It was all brand new line. I was using 20# P-Line CXX and 30# CXX. I don't know what he was using. We were using a bait knocker. Up until this trip, the knocker recovered 100% of the lures I used it on. This time it failed us twice. That is why jay had to swim for a lure. All in all, I think the fishing gods just hated us. Oh well, you gotta pay to play right : Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 28, 2009 Super User Posted February 28, 2009 Sometimes you get them and sometimes they get you. You just had a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad day. Quote
rfunfarm Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I lost a little over $400.00 on the last trip to Bass Pro on baits. :o Quote
Super User Muddy Posted February 28, 2009 Super User Posted February 28, 2009 Mine happened over 2 trips a few weeks apart; Trip One: I had a brand new Cabela's Prodigy/Fish EagleII combo, which I cat out for the first time with a jig on it. I put it down to get my depth finder right , a fish hit the jig>>>ROD AND REEL to the bottom of the lake 129.00 Trip Two, a couple of weeks later, same spot my friend Mark and I are on fish , he gets the birds nest from hell, so I let him use the twin brother to the rod in the lake. His hands were wet, long story made short That rod and reel to the bottom of the lake as it flew out of his hands another 129.00 on the bottom of the lake > Quote
CJ Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Since you stated lures, I wont mention the lower unit deal. I remember a day I lost over a dozen jigs and 3 LC crankbaits. I do loose a lot of money in lures annually. During tournaments if I hang up, I break it off and retie. I don't have time to try getting it loose. This year I have added some swimbaits to my collection and I expect I'll be loosing a few. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted March 1, 2009 Super User Posted March 1, 2009 I would be changing brands of line and purchasing a lure retriever. Get the one with the chains on it. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted March 1, 2009 Super User Posted March 1, 2009 We had a lure retriever. I would bet that Im better at knocking swimbaits loose with one than just about anyone. Baits were broken off on 3 different brands of line. 25lb Big Game, 30lb Pline CXX, and 26lb Siglon Flourocarbon. The Pline was spooled that morning, and the Sunline is about 3 weeks old on that reel. Sometimes karma/fishing gods just take a dump on you. Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted March 1, 2009 Super User Posted March 1, 2009 $300 in a day You guys are high rollers. The most I lost is $30. I lost a jackall giron and a spro frog. What ticks me off the most is I lost them before I caught a fish with either of them. :'( I knew I should have made the giron into a keychain. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted March 1, 2009 Super User Posted March 1, 2009 I don't think I've lost more than 10 bucks worth of lures in a day. Quote
JShrock07 Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I don't usually loose too much money in lures/poles or anything on any outing. The most I have ever lost was about $20.00 worth in lures, however this year already I have broken 3 poles all in seperate outings but they were junk anyway. Quote
cwen Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I alomst had a horrific loss. I a box of jerkbiats on top of my engine because my wife was talking to me. I left the house and got on the highway when it hit me because I saw the box still on the engine while driving 50 MPH plus. The box had easily 25-30 jerkbaits in it, and I only own lucky craft jerkbaits. Quote
SuskyDude Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Live had a few ice rod/reels get dragged in at 30$ a pop. Thats the most I've lost at one time, I think. I did lose a LC Pointer, on the first cast once. I vowed to never do that again. > Quote
princecraft papa Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 ok so we are not going to talk about loosing O/B motors! my brother & I went out Musky fishing one day, I had just bought a hand crafted, custom painted mega lure. $58, so I was sitting there tying on & shooting the s@@t with my bro, checked my knot,,,, nice looking knot... threw the lure in the water.... picked up my pole.....that is when I realized....I had tied on to a scap piece of line, I thuew a $58 lure overboard without ever even casting it!!! well thats my dumba$$ story, hope you all have a great day. Super User fishfordollars Posted March 1, 2009 Super User Posted March 1, 2009 I don't think I've lost more than 10 bucks worth of lures in a day. X2 and that was tungsten weights that got hung up in the rocks on Ray Hubbard. Quote
Tucson Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I don't count things like hooks or plastics but it galls me to lose a crank or spinnerbait. Overall, I've recovered more lures from brush then I've lost. Last week I lost a Rapala Husky Jerk but I recovered someone else's Rapala jointed shad rap and two spinnerbaits with trailers. It's especially good hunting on a Monday following a tournament! Quote

Academy price for three 5/8 oz. is 6.12. Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 about $50, lost three lucky craft jerkbaits. was using a pointer 128 in chartreuse shad and crushing bass but musky broke that off, moved down to a 100 in chartreuse shad, broke that off. Moved down to my final charteuse shad pointer, a size 78, lost that on a fish. I fished the rest of the day using pointers in different colors but I couldn't get a bite. Now I buy duplicates of everything. I can't fathom breaking off $300 worth of stuff in a day, I think I would have cried! Quote
ilovefooffur Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 I think the most I ever lost in baits is about $30 on a trip, but then again my most expensive bait is a $10 Terminatur Tungsten spinnerbait. Quote
bigfruits Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 i lost two avids and a fenwick hmg with symetre reels in about 3 secs when my canoe flipped on some rapids. and my stash got wet! Quote
njnitrobasser Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 my biggest losses have been cell phones.first one was hitting a stump and falling off the front of the boat.second was kicking a rod off the front deck and jumping in after it.the third and last time was a new i phone.I was in a tournament, had the i phone in my tackle bag, took it out to check the time on the way in,and fell off of the back of the boat while trying to prevent my boater from hitting the check in boat.I now have a water proof box that I put my phones in whenever I get around a boat or water.ps:my new I phone cost me 500.00,ouch!!!!!!!!
