RobbyZ5001 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 What is the furthest distance you would drive for tackle? What is your favorite part of your favorite tackle shop? Is it the free coffee? Is it the selection? The pricing? Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted February 25, 2009 Super User Posted February 25, 2009 My favorite Tackle Shop is 120 miles away. It's a Mom and Pop shop that's full of top quality bass tackle and plenty of chairs around to sit and talk shop. I love it. Quote
done Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Couple things...variety of stock, pricing (does not have to be the cheapest but reaosnable), good service. The service is my biggie. Let's say for instance, I really want a vibrax spinner or a Wave Fishing 5" Tiki-Stick that you do not commonly carry in stock. Being able to get you to order some for me (provided I am a regular). I would rather go to the mom and pop who works with me and gives me service than a huge BPS chain. We had a million of them in Buffalo NY area, I cannot find any in Gastonia, NC. Quote
BASS fisherman Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 195 mi about 3 hours 18 mins This Sunday some of the Pa guys are having a get together at the BPS in Harrisburg Pa. I do plan on shopping, but it is primarily a trip to meet some of the BR guys. My usual tackle shop is 15 minutes away. I like it because the owner is a local tournament guy who knows what people want. It is pretty well stocked but if he doesn't have something, he orders it. I have gone in there for one or two things and wind up BS'in with the guys for a few hours. Quote
wisturkeyhunter Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 With the internet theres no need to drive anywheres just to buy tackle. If I'm in the area of a tackle shop or outdoor store I'll stop but not worth the gas just to get tackle. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 25, 2009 Super User Posted February 25, 2009 I have driven 2 hours to go to a place called Green Top outside of Richmond. I go there because of the great selection. Quote
NHfroggin Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 My Favorite tackle shop is about 10 minutes from my house, northern bass supply. It has just about everything you could need. they also know the area lakes, they know whats working in the area, and also it has great customer service because its a small tackle shop. i do take the 2 1/2 hour trip to bass pro or cabelas once and a while, just to see what they have. Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted February 25, 2009 Super User Posted February 25, 2009 There is a shop less than a mile from my house. I used to walk there and spend a couple hours talking fishing, or whatever. Two brothers owned it and would order anything I needed. About ten years ago they sold it for another business venture. Now the guy that owns it is a real clown. If he doesn't sell it, you don't need it. He won't special order anything. There is another tackle shop/boat rental about a half mile from my house, that went out of business last year. I noticed last week that someone was there cleaning, and re-modeling, so I hope I will have a new place to go for my fishing equipment, and some good service, instead of traveling thirty-five miles to BPS. RobbyZ5001 Posted February 25, 2009 Author Posted February 25, 2009 For you guys who travel further distances. How did you hear about the shop? Quote
Willzx225 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 This past weekend I journied to a tackle shop that I had heard about a bunch from some other friends called The Great Outdoors in Cherryville, NC. The Great Outdoors is about 50-60 miles one way from my house. Man what a great place. There were two reasons why I will be making more trips there. First, they have tackle that either I had never seen or can not find anywhere. Secondly, everytime I got to the end of an isle, someone was always asking if there was anything I needed help finding (of which I probably need help putting most of it back instead of buying more but thats my problem ;D ). Great people and great products is what brings me back. Oh and I live roughly 8 miles from BPS here in Charlotte. Quote
R@ngerman195vs Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 We like doing day trips for tackle shop visits. Yup I said day trips. This includes, my wife, my mom and dad. We leave the house early, go get breakfast, head to BPS, Cabellas, and a couple of independent shops in between, eventually stop for dinner and head home. I'll run through a tank of gas for the whole day and feed the monkey at each stop. We like to visit the independent tackle shops for different selections than the chain stores have. We buy alot on the Internet too, but we love roaming around the stores, shooting the breeze with the sales guys. And nothing beats holding the stuff in your hands and looking over a new bait. Can't do that on the internet. Besides, its great family time. Plus, watching my mother and wife down on their hands and knees going through crankbaits is funny as heck! They're worse than most guys. Good times! Quote
AverageJoeBass Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I purchase most of my tackle at the local Wal-Mart. It is a Super Wal-Mart but the size of the fishing tackle area is pretty limited. But I like the fact that when we go grocery shopping once a week I can pick up hooks, weights, and maybe a new lure or 2 when we go. Now if I am looking for a specific lure I drive about 30 minutes to an Academy where they have a wonderful selection (I can browse for hours as I am sure most of you can) and I see alot of the lures I see being used on the fishing shows. There is a BPS shop but it is almost a 2 hour drive away and is alot heavier on the wallet versus going to Academy. But I still like to go to the BPS and spend a few hours looking over everything. Uncle Leo Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 10 minutes away, Greg always talks me into buying what they are biting on. Quote
Super User Tin Posted February 25, 2009 Super User Posted February 25, 2009 This is what I love about living in the middle of RI near 95. Everything is a half hour away... 8-) Quote

Jake. Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 My favorite tackle shop is only 2 or 3 miles away. It is a mom and pop shop that has a great selection of tackle. It's owned by nice people that greet you when you walk in. I like it better than any of the big chain stores. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted February 26, 2009 Super User Posted February 26, 2009 Three miles away, everything is super cheap. Quote
Red Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 nothing really in my area besides academy, so my nearest shop is just a click away, ***.com Quote
Btech Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Customer Service! Customer Service! Customer Service! That's all I look for in a Tackle Shop. I want to hear stories and be able to talk common ground with the sales rep. I don't like tackle shops that just try to sell stuff and push you out the door. Quote
White Bass 08 Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I have Dick's sporting goods, Gander Mtn., and two local tackle stores within ten minutes of my house. I tend to go with who has the best prices and customer service. I go to the local tackle store because they sponsor our local club. 15% discount on tackle. That is hard to compete with. I think it is better to support the local shops versus the big chains. Quote
Triton20x3pro Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I buy quite a bit online because I live in the middle of no where. I do however love the mom and pop shops. Whenever I'm traveling for tourneys I will try to stop and visit with these people. It is just hard to beat that atmosphere. Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I just started working 2 days a week in Dayton, OH. Got on google to see if there was a little tackle place in town (as opposed to Dicks or Gander) and found that just 4 blocks from my office is a tackle shop that does reel repair, rod repair, custom rods, and will even make custom jigs/spinnerbaits while you shop through all the usual gear. I went straight home and apologized to my wife for the money I am about to spend. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted February 28, 2009 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted February 28, 2009 Mom's bait and tackle, about 5 miles away. Metal building, no AC, dark and dusty with every soft plastic known to man. Quote
