In your opinion, when you walk into a fishing store what do you look for? Whether it's the customer service or variety of stuff they have.

For me I like to walk into a tackle/fishing store, I like to talk to the workers and see how much do they know about fishing themselves. Hoping maybe I can pick up a few tips.

When I go into a tackle shop I go there because I want something specific.

I will usually go in with the intention to spend only the alloted amount on said product.  But by the time I leave I have spent atleast twice that amount.

In a small shop I will sit and BS with the guys for an hour or so.

When I go to the larger stores, the employees either are totally clueless, or way too busy to stop and chat for a bit.

Very rarely do I ever just stop in a store to see what they got. When I do, either I am totally disappointed or I end up spending way too much $$.

I look for variety.  I need a place that carries stuff I want.  Most places around here carry crap, so usually end up ordering stuff and stay out of those useless places.  Does me no good to go to a place with customer service if they do not have anything I am needing.

Yep,and my biggest b**ch is that the stuff that is worth a darn never gets restocked.Nothing worse than walking into a section with holes everywhere.All the good colors or sizes gone."Can anybody tell me if you guys will be getting more?" Hell no :

  I have never agreed with you more. CHAT? I don't chat I talk with my friends and relatives.  I don't need more than little bits of information and direction from store staff, other than that leave me alone. I will bring to the register what I want to buy.

I always hope to find things that I use but none of the big chains seem to carry, so that if I need it I don't have to order it online.

1.  To view the products offered.

2.  To view the pricing of the products offered.

3.  The helpfulness of the sales force.

4.  If they have a dog running around.

With small tackle shops, the dog is the key.  ;D

I always look for good local or regional baits that I can not find anywhere else or are no longer produced.  I am a sucker for an old Mom and Pop store.  On hardbaits, the more dust on certain baits the better  ;D  My latest find was a bunch of old # 5 Fat Raps.

No chat for me either.  The places around her cater more to hunting so you get left alone pretty good while in the fishing area.

Years ago, I would go into lacal tackle shops, grab a cup of coffee and BS with the owner for quite a while.  The old tackle store owners actually knew what baits were hot at the time and knew how to fish them.  They could fix reels and give you fishing tips.  With all the Academy's, Dicks, etc. around everywhere and running the little guys out of business I just go in, get my stuff, and get the heck out.   It's really too bad that the big stores, for the most part cannot find knowledgable people to work for them.

I only go to the tackle shop if I am looking for something in particular, otherwise I will buy things I already have and do not need. I do not talk to any employees not that Im rude Im just in the zone. If I want information on something that I do not know about I post questions on Bassrescouce before I make a purchase. This is one expensive hobby!

I only need one thing from the big stores, RC cranks. And I order those on line. I would rather give my business to the smaller guy. We have a great place here in IN. and that is where I go. He has the stuff you need. If he ain't got it, you don't need it!

Same here. I know why I'm there. I know what I'm looking for. I don't mind if an employee asked me if I need any help finding something, but I do mind if an employee starts a sales pitch.

I go there to buy if they have what I need.  I usually go to Cabelas, and 2 different Dicks stores to find my stuff

They are helpful, normally they know a lot about fishing and ........ they are the danged BaitMonkey in stealth mode, you don 't see 'em a comin ', before you know it you end up with a lot more than you were planning to purchase.

First I rummage thru the clearance bins for any treasures. Then I see if there are any giveaways, food included. As a last resort I'll go thru the aisles and see what's available.

In my case, I cant stand it when the employees ask me if I need help finding something.

Chances are, I know what's on the shelves better than they do.

And it also bugs me when they are out of something and it has been a few weeks since they have had that product.

When I go back a second time to get said product and they still don't have it stocked, that is my cue not to shop there anymore.

There are 2 stores that I don't go to anymore because of that very reason.

I mainly go to one tackle shop.  If they don't have something, they order it, on the spot.  Not 2 months later! >

My favorite tackle shop is the classic Ma and Pa shop. It's in a very old house and it has several stools and old chairs where we spend most of our time trying to throw each other off of the real pattern. It only caters to tournament anglers. It is wall to wall tournament tackle. The owner (Ron Sutton) is a tournament angler and is the classic "handshake is better than a contract" type of guy. When I go in and I might not come out for hours.

Oh and it's 120miles from my house.

I go strictly because I want to see what they're carrying.  Next, I want employees there to leave me alone unless I need their assistance.  I usually don't like to stick around too long if I really don't need to.  Plus, I get the best information from here.

For me a scan of what they carry says it all.

If a place has white and green pork frogs, culprit worms, NFL team crank baits etc that tells me the staff isn't clued in at all.

Likewise, if they lack tubes, shakey heads, drop shot hooks/weights, senko's etc, and green pumpkin, and watermelon colors they are probably not on top of things either.

I've found several Gander Mountain stores to be quite good. And a couple of BIG stores to be just EH.
