You could watch someone on DVD do it for hours and learn about as much as you would practicing your casting for 30 minutes.  Practice is the only way to work out the kinks and get the feel of it.

Are you talking about distance or accuracy? IMHO, accuracy is more important and can only be improved with parctice, but your rod/reel/line/lure choices have a major impact on casting distance...and no amount of practice can make up for poor equipment choices.
