People are crazy and sometimes you have to be careful who you are foolin with. Their are fishing jetties on a lake I frequent Im in a boat,I have the whole lake I try to stay away from the bank fishermen, its all they have. One day two guys in a boat went straight for a area where 2 kids were fishing. The kid said"sir, we were here first." Th e boaters said really bad things to those kids. the day went on, we went to the boat ramp and there was a big burly fellow at the boat ramp at the dock in a lawn chair.I loaded up the boat and those other guys rode up. The big guy didnt say a word. He stepped aboard and picked one of them up and threw him in the water, followed by the other guy. He then took the keys of the boats ignition and threw them way out into the lake. He folded up his chair and yelled come kids lets go!

As a kid restricted to shore I never understood why boaters would get right up on top of me when they could go anywhere else in the lake.  Nowadays, if I'm in the boat I make sure to keep well back from any shore fishermen (or boaters for that matter!).

As far as on land, as a general rule 20 feet is too close for me, but I know there are times when there is no choice but to be closer.

Fortunately, I'm not confined to the shore, but the same thing happens in the boat.  I try to stay well away from people and I would NEVER go into a small area and try to bully somebody out of a spot.  However, over the years I've noticed that it seems I'm the only that abides by this courtesy!  I would say boaters are even more rude and inconsiderate, seeing as though they have the entire lake to fish and seem to end up a few yards from me.

If I can read the namebrand of your boat or see your registration numbers, then you are too close >:(!!!  I can't tell you how many times people have gotten within a long cast of where I've been catchin' 'em.

Never had a problem.

I just make sure I am not in the other guy's "zone" and give him enough room.

I also speak with everyone either when I arrive or during the time I am on the bank.

Letting the other guy you are not going to intrude eliminates 99% of the problem. ;)

I always talk with other fisherman before I even wet a line if im around anyone on the bank. Most of the time they are families with kids etc and I usually give them enough space so the kids can have their space... I think as long as you are cordial, "Most" of the time people are pretty cool.

You do get those other people who after you catch a fish they will try and throw on your spot. I usaully just throw over the top of them and they get the point. Accuracy, confidence and politeness usually trumps them :)

That reminds me of anotherI wasn't involved but was there to witness.

When the spring white bass run is onthere are tons of anglers on the bank and even more on boats at this particular river.  This one weekend I decided to stop by and wet my line.  The bank was packed shoulder to shoulder with anglers underneath this one freeway bridge.  Suddenly a couple pulled up in a boat and anchored right underneath the bridge where about 20 guys there casting.  Some words were exchanged but the boat refused to budge.  One guy tossed his line right over their boat and the guy in the boat grabbed the line and cut the line.  Arguments erupted and the guy from the bank tied on an egg sinker and chucked it right back at the boat.  The woman in the boat shrieked in pain while covering he foreheadclaiming that the man had struck her.  They called the police and in a matter of a few minutes, a deputy arrived on the scene and brought the couple and the bank angler in for questioning.

The deputy told the women to remove her hand and to show him her wound.  She took her hand off and to everybody's surpriseshe was never struckfaking it the whole time.  After a few minutes of talking and arguing, both party apologized for their actions and no one was taken in.

Hmm, the egg sinker defense. I'll remember that one.

I was bank fishing with a bud of mine once. We were right next to the boat launch and noticed a boat coming in after a day of fishing. A guy got off and went to go get the truck, a gal got off and stood nearby the ramp, while the other fellow back the boat back out.

So the guy in the boat had a few minutes to kill so he decided to back out to the middle of the river and began running around in circles over and over. The waves keep crashing in onto the shore making it very difficult for us bank anglers. This one big Native American guy next to me got up and grabbed a fairly hefty stick, walked towards us by the ramp, looked and us and said; this guy needs his @$$ kicked!

I remember looking at my bud and said; I don't want to stick around if this crap goes down.

Thank God things didn't get out of hand and no one got hurt.

I mainly fish a river/lake which is literally thousands of acres and at least a few times a year it seems the most popular place for other people to fish is under my boat...and I'm not talking about "community holes" either. It seems that a my bass boat is a fishing jerk magnet, especially if they see you catch a fish. It is to the point now that if I hook a fish while someone is driving by I'll pretend nothing is going on so they don't stop. If they do stop and start to get too close I just grab my heaviest spook and set my "boundaries". If they don't get the hint, I just leave. There is way too much good water to fish to waste my time with some tool that can't find fish on his own.

I got one. I was in the boat and pulling into this cove, the cove is atleast 300ft from one bank to the other. Theres a guy just sitting in the middle of the cove in the captains chair with his motor off and trolling motor stowed, I pull in and start fishing down the bank on one side and when I look over he's put his trolling motor down and is heading my way! I just keep fishing and then he pulls RIGHT in front of me within flippin distance :o and starts fishing about one bass boat length in front of me. I didnt say a word, just crank up and idle to the other side of the cove, and kinda keep a eye on him, couple mins later I hook up with a nice 3lber ;D my Dad was in the back of the boat so when I hooked up I made sure to yell I GOT A NICE ONE!! ;D He left that cove whithin a couple mins! ;D

Guessing this guy's name was 'Kicking Donkey'.........................you know...................@$$................... ;)

Never had/witnessed altercations like this before but I like the guy's solution of tossing those buttheads in the lake for yelling at his kids.

Reading these reminded me of a time where I fishing a point sitting in 10' casting to 3'. Throwing a jerkbait and was catching fish.

This is what i call bent pole syndrome. This guy was fishing towards us at a very slow pace. When he got close enough to see us catching a few fish, he throws the TM on high and boogies right in front of us. Mind you I am pretty stationary where i am. He is traveling 25 yds in front of us right across the point at the shallow area I was casting to. He asked if we were doing any good. I said we were until now. He fires back with "public water, don't own the spot, blah blah blah".

We proceed to fish in silence for five or so minutes and I get tired of his presence, so I start throwing at the side of his boat as it was sitting in the spot I was casting to prior to his arrival. On the second cast I hook a 4 and he is fuming. Next cast is a 3 and I am culling. He moves to the right a little to where I can get to my spot which is 10' behind his boat and whack a 4.5. With this he starts to leave and i tell him to have a nice day.

Later at the weigh in he files a protest and says I was fishing too close too HIM!! It was a all I could do to maintain my composure. I explained the incident and was witnessed by another boat. He was banned from fishing with that trail again.

Bad thing was he had a rep of doing that type of thing to other people. He knew he was doing it. Why are some people like that. Maybe he enjoys that, I have no clue. I was glad to take his money that day.

My situation is a little different. I pay to rent a jon-boat in a city park where no bank fishing is allowed. The park has a patrol boat but very seldom chases people off the banks. But very few people bank fish there anyway...until the last couple years. North Carolina is one of the states with the highest number of Mexican immigrants...strange "coincidence" that almost all of the "new" bank fisherman have been Mexicans. Make your own judgements, and I know some are fishing for their supper but they have trashed up the banks and many of my best spots are now littered with fishing line. Not to mention the 7 and 8 pounders I used to catch off the banks are long gone. Sorry if this sounds like a rant but it really chaps me that they have no respect for the lake or the law.

I found a couple guys fishing in my subdivisions' lake and they were keeping EVERYTHING they caught. If they were doing 'catch and release', I would have ignored it but they weren't. I knew they were in there illegally but decided against confronting them about it. The spot where there were sneaking in is very small as well as the area they can fish. So I was trimming up a deadfall a couple days later to make some casting lanes from my boat and drug all the limbs over to the spot they can fish. Their little illegal honey hole is now SNAG CENTRAL.

Alot of the public places i fish around town are usualy crowded. I just walk up, say "Hi how the fish bittin today?" "mind if i fish this area?" Never had anyone say no, and usualy end up BSin with the guy for a few hours while fishin.

ive learned were alot of good holes are, and as long as the conversation stays away from politics its pretty plesent.

My rule is you'd better pull up at least one good cast behind me or my next cast will be at your head. Notice I said behind. Too many times I have been fishing down a weedline or bank and some yahoo pulls up right in front of me and starts fishing the same direction. I usually just fire up the outboard and scream by him. He usually gets the message.

Dan,

I think he was saying he caught them from his bank.  It is a little annoying though how many people always seem to chime in about the immigrants.  I guess they make an easy target.

My normal honey hole is a large river and I seldom run into any problems. Last year was the first time I had any type of a problem. I was fishing a small area of underwater structure that I had found in weeks past and I had not caught anything off this area in 20 mins but I had too much confidence in that spot to just leave it, so I continued to hit the spot for a good while longer. I had a boat come up to me and watch me fish for a while and I finally started to catch fish. I caught maybe 5 or six before he motored about 50 ft from me and asked how well I was doing. I told him I had caught a few and he went on about his buisness, well about 20 mins goes by and here he comes again but this time he wasn't trying to talk he was just fishing he was practically fishing right up on me when I finally got mad and I tossed my pole in the boat and fired it up and took off. Later that day I was hammering some good 3-4 lbers in a grassy area and here comes the same boat. I figured there is no way this guy can be coming to run me off again. But he was, he came right back up and started fishing right on top of me, literally we were moving our boats just to make sure they didn't hit. So finally I asked him why he continued to do this and he said that when he sees someone catching fish he assumes that the fish are only in that spot and everyone should have a chance. Well I completley disagree with this. Finally about 10 mins go by and he got tired of my catching fish and he was still empty handed.  ;D ;D

nitro- i give you credit because i would have snapped the 2 cnd time.I have been known to have a short fuse while I am on the ocean comm. fishing and I think it might carry over in a situation like that. Some people r clueless so you cant get that mad ,but when they know better - thats when its time to lay down the law.

The only places I fish everyday are 2 golf course ponds where you are sometimes limited to one side. If a party is in the middle of the bank the farthest you can get is a good 15' so I am always sure to make friends with the people and just leave them be. I catch so many fish they usually just leave anyway but sometimes I have to go to to the other pond to avoid a scene.

With my job I try not to ever cause a scene. The last thing I want to do is have someone saying things that I did. So I usually keep to myself, I've only had to act on things 2 times but it was something that had to be dealt with. 8-)

i just read the thread by Dan saying it's easy to blame the immigrants, well Dan come to Braddock park, N.Bergen n.j. and i will show you where there USED to be 10 sunfish beds that are no longer there because of your "easy to blame immigrants", i have personally witnessed 3 "sweethearts" take every sunfish off a bed, they fish with hand-lines,have no regard for laws or limits and most of all NO LISECNES! it took every cell in my body no to go to jail that day!and i have called fish and game,in jersey, game wardens are like hens teeth.1 officer for like 3-4 counties, took 2 hours for him to show up,they were long gone, well guess what? the lake no longer has hand liners know why? NO MORE SUNFISH BEDS! at least not in "hand-line distance" so Dan, please forgive me if i don't feel the same as you do about "easy to blame immigrants"

I guess I need to move to wherever you are from since white folk don't break the law there, and you can tell if someone is an immigrant by a glance.  If you actually walked up to these folks and asked to see there green cards or explained why what they were doing is harmful then I take it back.

I wasn't trying to offend anyone Matt. I'm just describing what has happened on my fishing hole...the lake is only 150 acres and I've been fishing it for 10 years now so it's not hard to see who's there. I would feel the same way about anyone trashing up such a beautiful lake, even if bank fishing was allowed.

...and Dominion Dan, I meant the banks I fish FROM MY RENTED JON-BOAT...do you really think I would make such statements if I bank fished there myself? Come on.

BassmanDan,

Don't worry about it, but I think its fairly likely someone besides immigrants contributed to the problem.
