I was just wondering how many people here work at a tackle/ bait/ outdoors store, whether its BPS, Cabelas, WalMart, or any other places for that matter.

It would seem like a good place for a person with a Bait Monkey on their back to work.

Do you get reasonable discounts on stuff from the store?

Just curious-

I wish i did, but currently my work is just school. Haha you're probably right about the BM, it'll clock in as soon as you get your paycheck. I'm curious too about the discounts part.

I would actually love to open my own tackle shop but I'm having trouble taking the leap of faith since I already have a good job. The discounts would be awesome though!!!

Yeah, but you would never have time to go fishing  :)

I sell tackle here at my truck accessories store, the discount don't help if you end up spending more because it's cheaper.  Just ask Burley our friendship is awfull shaky, he can't pass up a deal and thus spends more on tackle than he ever would have buying it retail.

Tell me about it.  I used to do a lot of bicycling and thought having a bicycle business would be just the thing.  I never had time to ride and was sick of seeing bicycles day in and day out.

My wife and I almost did this a few years back.  It's still dream of ours to do but we've decided to wait until the kids are at least a good bit older than they are now.

A few things that will stop a man from fishing:

Buy,own, or work at:

A marina

Boat dealership

Tackle shop

Had a life long fishing buddy that bought Doyle English Marina many years ago on Toledo Bend. Each day started at 3:30am and ended around 9:00pm. He no longer had the time, energy, or desire to fish. Any free time he happen to acquire was spent as far away from the water as he could get.

Sold the marina after about 15 years and it was still several years before he had any desire to get back on the water.

The busy days are the weekend so you have to be there. Unless you enjoy hitting the water by yourself during the week forget about it. You will have to listen to everyone else's fishing stories instead of living them.

Be very careful what you wish for.

I worked for Academy Sports & Outdoors; what I really like was we had first shots at discontinued items with price drops of over 65%.

Like Jack said it interfered with my fishing time. ;)

I worked at Dick's Sporting Goods for a while and I really enjoyed it. I just did it a couple nights a week. (part time) Made a bunch of new fishing buddies, got great discounts, and had fun teaching new anglers a few tricks and tips.

I'm thinking about going back, I really miss that employee discount. It was at least 25% on everything fishing related. Some things, such as abu garcia reels, were up to 50%.

My paychecks there went right back into the store, so they liked having me around.

I know what your saying I used to love cars and building hotrods... now i work in a garrage and want to walk home at the end of the day.

Although if you owned your own tackle shop you could (Assuming you were busy) Hire help so they cant fish and you can :P

Or put a pond out front and fish it :P good marketing if you use your lures.
