ChiCityBasser Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 I prefer Cabelas over Bass Pro Shops but haven't had a bad experience with either. I shop them both online and in store as well and the shipping times for both have been fast with my experience. Fortunate enough to live on the far south side of Chicago with BPS being in Portage, IN and Cabelas in Hammond, IN and also a BPS in Gurnee, IL and a Cabelas in Hoffman Estates. I visit the 2 Stores in Indiana quite often for the online Cabelas Bargain Cave deals and the in store sales and deals. The customer service has been great with both stores but the selection from one store to another can be different. Least thats what I found when visiting the Cabelas/Hoffman Estates store versus the Cabelas/Hammond store. The rod selection or availibity wasn't even close between the 2 stores with Hammond having a 3-1 selection over the Hoffman estates store. Other than that they are both great and just prefer Cabelas Cabelas just recently had an in-store deal on Shimano Spinning reels and got a Shimano Sahara at regular price and the Cabelas XML at 50% off the sale price of $100. They also have an in-store clearance on the Daiwa Fuego B/C at $159 Quote
Certified Public Angler Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Another Cabelas > BPS vote here. Quote
Joey Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Me too! Never had a problem with BPS and really enjoy their stores. Quote
MSPbass Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I prefer Cabela's over BPS myself, but the dude was asking specifically about catalogs. Get 'em both man and see for yourself! They have a lot of the same stuff, but there are a certain amount of items exclusive to each company. I still enjoy seeing the pics and reading the descriptions in the old fashioned paper catalogs too. They have a place my home, right in one special room, where I do a lot of thinking. But after I'm done thinking and it's time to buy, I'll go to my local shop, the specific company's web site or TW before either of them. Another fun catalog is Northern Bass Supply. Last one I got was black and white, but was packed with gear. Quote

Super User Dan: Posted January 13, 2009 Super User Posted January 13, 2009 Hey Tony I wish you could visit The Hamburg PA Store here in PA The Rod and Reel section would blow your mind, and ALL THE SALESPEOPLE are helpful and knowledgeable/ From Loomis and Sage all the way to thier version of the Ugly Stick Every reel you can imagine, on hendels for you to feel the action. It is truely incredible and much better stocked than the Harrisburg BPS! I don't know, Muddy. They had a lot of reels, but were missing many 2500 SHimano spinning reels that I was looking for as well as left hand baitcasters. Also, they do have a lot of G Loomis rods but not the best selection of St Croix or other brands. I was impressed that they had a lot of Shimano rods, but again, not as many models as I would have liked to see. I haven't been to the Harrisburg BPS but the one in Richmond has WAY more rods and reels than the Hamburg Cabelas. Although I have to say I did enjoy all the taxidermy they have in Hamburg. That was pretty cool. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 13, 2009 Super User Posted January 13, 2009 I haven't been to the other store , so I can't compare. Please note that if you want to check a few rods out, call ahead of time ( bout 5 days notice) just give them your name, when you arrive at the store go to the service desk and check them out there I have never been in that store once without the reel dept being completely stocked and I am there over 20 times a year! Next time you come this way, drop me a pm and bring a rod, a few good ponds and the Littl Skcukill ( SMALLIES) close by Dominick Quote

It is truely incredible and much better stocked than the Harrisburg BPS! That is not even remotely the experience that I've had at hamburg Cabelas and the Harrisburg BPS. I never feel like cabelas has anywhere near the selection that BPS does. Like others said, they have better clothing and whatnot but as far as tackle selection goes I'd take BPS any day. Cabelas does have a few things that BPS doesn't have but for the most part BPS has much more to offer IMO. Quote
ProCraft Joe Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I trade with both places. BPS does have more variety but Cabelas does have things you can't get at BPS. I buy their real image spoons all the time. Quote

I am there a lot and their reel selection is extraordinary I have not been to BPS a fraction of the time, They didn't even have the new BPS Pro Qualifier the last time I was there, and they had been on the market for over a month! MSPbass Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 http://www.northernbass.com/ I went and requested one as soon as I left here and saw they've changed things up a little. I clicked on the "Mailing List" link in the middle of the page and filled out the info. Below that was a check box for a new catalog. That should work. Otherwise, it said elsewhere on the site to call them to get one. Quote
Btech Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 I think Cabelas has the BEST customer service EVER. They do take some time for mail ordered catalogs and such but its worth the wait. However i have a Bass Pro in my neighborhood so i spend my money there - Although Im going to check out a Cabelas store .... May need to switch (I also hunt a bit) Quote
