christopherjake Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Wow, that's the kind of customer service I'm talking about. Cabela's is great!
21farms Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Everywhere they open a store they receive tax increment financing for 20 years or more. The small stores and, you, the taxpayer, pick up their load. Most of these companies of this size make claims that the economic benefit they provide outweighs the cost of TIF. I've studied a number of cases and it appears to be rare that this is so. senile1, i was a city planner for over a decade and was a redevelopment specialist. i thnk the part of TIF financing is that it is only available in areas where development would not otherwise occur (distressed, underdeveloped areas). smaller businesses move into good locations so they can have a steady client base to sustain their business. because cabelas is a regional draw, they can locate in an underdeveloped area...in fact, they are targeted by redevelopment agencies because they attract othe businesses to follow them to where they are because of the increase in potential customers in the area. now, back on track, i never shopped at cabelas until this year but i too am sold on their customer service. if you have to send something back, just slap on the USP label included in your order.
ejtaylor822 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I agree. Have always great results with Cabela's. Great selection, reasonalble pricing, and shipping has been great.
Tokyo Tony Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 It's sad how some people take advantage of Cabela's customer service. I hear of people not respecting their equipment at all because they know they can just take it back and return it, no questions asked. Those people P me off. Regarding Cabela's running mom and pop stores out of business: it's called capitalism. Capitalism and the free market are what distinguish this country from all of the pathetic European nations with lazy, aging populations. How can you blame Cabela's for taking advantage of a tax break offered to them by towns and states? How is that their fault in any way? It would be irresponsible of them not to try to make the biggest profit possible. If you want to blame anyone, blame the towns and states that offer the tax breaks. The point is, it's a win-win situation. Further, I'm not sure about Cabela's, but I know that Bass Pro Shops was started by Mr. Morris in a corner of his dad's store, with one wall of lures and tackle. Through insanely hard work and intelligence, he created the BPS chain. Why should people be punished for intelligence, hard work, and copetence?
cbreeze22 Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Cabelas opened up here in Phoenix couple years ago. My experience with them has been great. Worked closely with me on my boat purchase both on and off the water. Im in the store alot and great friendly people. I also like to support some of the local smaller guys like Fisherman Choice. I pickup super tips thru them on techniques and whats working on the lakes. These guys spend a lot of time with you and really seem interested in steering you in the right direction. 8-)
shootermcbob Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 I don't know about all the inner workings of tax breaks and all that. I had never been in Wheeling in my life (45 youthful years) until Cabelas opened. When it did, there was a big hill top with a Cabelas store. Now there is a Wal-mart, McDonalds, Wendys, Applebees, Kohls, and several other stores. In other words, too many to remember or list. I don't know about any other stores closing in the area, but I know several thousand people are there alot and they probably never went to Wheeling before. I have no idea how much money Cabelas has infused into the local economy, but I am sure it is substantial. As for their customer service, it is second to none. I took my daughter to the wheeling store not long after it opened. She was three. I had her sitting on the railing looking at the fish they have swimming in the open pond area. One of their clerks, Mark, noticed and went and got some food so my little girl could feed the fish. She Loved it!!! Now, a few years later he still recognizes me when I go in. I spoke to him at length one day this past summer and asked him if he knew why we kept coming back there and how he always seemed to remember me. He said "I remember you and your daughter sitting on the rail and watching the fish, and I remember getting her some food to feed the fish. And I remember her being so happy and laughing cause the fish were just going nuts over the food". I am one of but several thousand persons passing thru that store each day/year. The fact that he remembered how happy my child was is irreplaceable. Nobody can top that, ever. The rest is just icing on the cake.
