For years BASSMASTER Magazine was the standard. Now FLW is has caught up if not passed BASSMASTER. I looked at the new FLW format and I think I actually like it better. Forget advertisments the words per page in the BASSM vs FLW is not even close. Looking at the two now Bassmaster is 50% pictures in alot of its articles. FLW goes much more in depth in everything it covers. Comparing the two heres what I found.

Bass     vs         FLW

Day on the lake vs Day of Practice

-most in depth part of Bassmaster but I like Day of Practice better the practice days are all across the country not 1000acre southern lakes, and the pros are doing what they do not selling lures (like in Day on the Lake-sometimes), Day of practice isnt in the new FLW but maybe its just for 1 issue

FLW only   inside the box

Love the inside the box articles but they werent in this months edition hope they come back

Articles-Close to same number but usually more are about techniques in FLW, Lots of other articles in Bassmasters, I get lots of BASSMASTERS anymore where maybe 1 or two short articles are about fishing techniqes. The best two features in Bassmasters are "Bass patterns, and Pros Pointers".

Equipement reviews-Both are not objective, both say this bait will great blah blah blah. But FLW has some more in depth reviews not just "this is great buy it".

Overall if I had to choose one it would be FLW OUTDOORS no question. I still love Bassmaster Magazine but it has lost its spot as the king of Bass Fishing Magazines and not to mention I think BASSIN is catching up but their articles are still pretty dumbed down (basic) but they are getting better every year. In-fisherman actually has some of the most in depth articles problem is there is 1 or 2 on bass at most in each issue. You can get the annual bass edition and it usually summarizes the whole year.

So what do you guys like in a magzine?

For me its

-info on destinations

-tour results

-IN DEPTH articles not generic "10 ways to fish grass" (BASSMASTER!!)

you wanna talk about fishing grass talk about it!!!! This isnt Cosmo, dont make your article look like there "10 ways to Please you man"

-Product reviews-more products the better, not just people paying you I like it when FLW compares 10 different poppers, swimbaits, ect.

-and a Day of Practice/on the Lake, Bassmasters would be fine if they mixed it up, go to California once, maybe a northern lake, not the same lakes

So there you have it those are my thoughts. Agree or Disagree? What do you like in a Magazine?

writers pay attention

Bassin' and Bassin Extras slam dunks them both.  :)

I've been getting North American Fisherman, In-Fisherman, and BassMasters and just this month got a copy of Bassin'. I like the other three for various reasons (multi species fishing) 8-) but I agree with Sam in that Bassin' is more informative concerning bass fishing.  ;)Started my subscription to it today. ;D     Happy fishing.

I have been takeing Bassmaster for about 20 years, it sure aint what it used to be. I have never seen the FLW magazine but I think I will try to find a copy. Haven't seen Bassin in several years, it allways struck me as just a little bit shady, just like North American Fishing Club. Bass Times is pretty good but it's articles read a lot like adds.It also has a lot of enviromental stuff that I should be interested in but am really not.

Bassmaster and FLW both have excellent articles, though they seem like they are written for a 10 year old.  My favorite is In~Fisherman, but then again, I do spend about 10% of my fishing time targeting other species.  If you are a bass only person, BM, FLW, and Bassin' are probably the way to go.

Bassin' is my favorite, then BASSMASTER, then Bass Times. I canceled my FLW membership as I didn't like the magazine. When did FLW change their format? Maybe it's better now.

Bassin'.............awesome

FLW..................great

BassMaster.......good (for one reason..."day on the lake")

If I had to choose it would be FLW. It's more informative, has better articles, and is layed out much better.

my 2 cents...and happy holiday's

For me, In-Fisherman, hands down. I do like BM and find some useful stuff in there (can never read too much) but IF is the only one I've ever subscribed too. Take that back, I used to subscribe to Fishing Facts -back in the 70s. I've never seen FLW -Colorado isn't known as a prime bass market.

I get Bassmaster and Bass times and like them both.  Bass times, naturally, focues a lot on the tournaments, but I really like the insight into the techniques and application that is used.  Will have to check out the others.

That was always my pet peeve too. I hated the phrase, "depends on conditions..." WHAT CONDITIONS AND WHAT DO YOU DO ABOUT IT! I would stammer. I vowed that when I write I wouldn't leave a reader high and dry.

BASSMasters is good, FLW is good but my favorite BY FAR is Bass West.  It is written with the competitive angler in mind but also it is very in depth with its articles.  They do the "10 ways to improve..." articles but they also explain their reasoning.  It is much more than "when fishing grass beds, use a rattle trap."

The only drawback is that their sense of urgency is nil.  My last issue was recapping how certain anglers fished in the Classic.  Oh well, very high quality information.

I think In-Fisherman is by far the most in-depth and informative magazine around.  Although, I do usually only read the bass articles (don't want to cloud my mind with that walleye crap!!).  FLW and Bassmaster are good magazines, but it is very repetative information.  For example, if you look at an issue from 2000 on dock fishing and look at an article on dock fishing from this year, it would have the same tips and the same diagrams.  I do still read them both----10 feet of snow makes you do stupid things!!!!  Bassin', to me, has very basic articles and tips and doesn't go too in-depth.

The best source of information is being on the water. :P
