What would you do if you had to give up fishing for one year? How would you cope with the fishing withdrawals? How would you continue to hone your skills without actual time on the water? In just about a month, I'll be boarding a plane for another tour in Iraq. I'm just looking for any ideas to keep me from losing my mind. Can anyone recommend any good, fishing related books/DVDs?

I don't know what you could do other than visit here, and get as many bass fishing mags as you can to read.  Alot of the members here do alot for the forum members over in Iraq.  You could carve lures maybe, like crankbaits, and topwaters.

Best of luck to you over there.  Keep your head down!

Man that's a tough one

Let me first say thank you, and secondly wish you safe travels.

Have you looked at what BPS has to offer?Do you keep a log of trips?,maybe you could copy some of them to reflect on while your away.

I'm not sure how accessible the internet will be. Last time, I was able to get on, but had to wait in some pretty long lines.

Your rifle is your rod, your bullet is your line and the enemy is the fish.  Now go blow them suckers out of the water.   Be safe over there.....

Why stop fishing, when I deployed to Iraq I had my wife send me a traveling pole. I was stationed on Camp Habania (nice pond there on camp) as well as the Euphfrates. you are proably thinking that I am crazy, but the Iraqis love to fish especialy for carp. you never know.

as far as time,  there is time heck I am a Marine Infantry dude an still found the time.

hope all goes well let me know if you need anything over there an wish I could join you.

Be safe and thanks for what you do. You are one of the many great Americans who are helping us stay a safe nation. Thank you.

As for what to do?  Do what the other guys are doing.  Playing cards; reading; sleeping; etc.

And try to fish in a safe place when you can.

Otherwise, stay as safe as you can and come on home ASAP.  :)

Yeah, I fished the Tigris and Euphrates last time, but never caught anything. Anyway, the way things are looking, we may not have the freedom to do stuff like that anymore. If they don't sign the SOFA or extend the U.N. mandate we may not be doing much of anything.

You ever get into video games at all or are you even allowed those?  I'm not into them myself, but my kid is and shopping for him I've seen some pretty impressing (looking anyway) fishing games you might consider.

Thanks for serving your country BD.  Stay safe.

I use both. Last time I took one of those cheap collapsible spinning rods. This time I'm packing one of my older baitcasters. I'm sure I'll get some funny looks when I start pitchin' and flippin' to imaginary bass, not unlike the ones I get from my neighbors when I do it in my backyard.

Saw some photos a year or so back of a British soldier with a good fish he caught in the presidents palace lake. Looked like a barbel , he caught it on a waffle. The lake area is designed like the set of the Flintstones - one of Saddam's little quirks .

Best of luck and stay safe , Bob

When I was over there I got a Wii and Sega Bass fishing.. its pretty cool...

whats your MOS?

I was lucky and we were on a COB that had internet so I actually had it in my CHU .. it was expensive.. but well worth the hassle of slow and spotty connection

I had a lot of support from my fishing buddies sending me really cool pictures and stickers and magazine and all sorts of things...

shoot me a PM when you get set up... I will shoot you out something... ... care packages no matter what is in them is AWESOME!!!
