went to a strip pit to fish this weekend and had a question about the size of the fish....My brother and I probably caught 100 bass but they were all really small, under a pound.. We managed to catch 4 larger bass , 6-3, 5-13, 4-11, and 3-11.   I just thought this lake would be loaded with 2 lbers, but there were none to be found... they were either really small, or really big.  Could anyone give me some reasons why it would be this way?   darren

The pond is overpopulated and you have a few bigger bass from an earlier year class. The rest of the bass are going to be small and stunted. The chances of this situation improving on a strip pit pond are slim. Enjoy it while it lasts.

p.s. If this is public property, contact the DNR and maybe they will help.

and what if it's private? My private pond is about the same, I can catch 8-10 bass in an outing that are 1 lbs. but only rarely do we see anything over 3 lbs.

New guy with a quetion. What is a strip pond?

A pond where women take off their clothes. ;) J/K

Strip pond is into what an old quarry becomes after it 's been abandoned, it usually gets filled with rain or spring water over the years and becomes a pond.

I love fishing in strip ponds! Lots of good obvious points to fish.

I too suggest taking a look at the pondboss website, I've looked through some of their materials before and they provide some really great insight.

You have a pond that is out of balance. You need to start removeing the smaller ones and improving the cover for the bait fish to hide and get bigger. This isn't the only fix. These are just two that you can do on your own.
